Cholera for Sale in New York! (Dirty Water Vending Machine)
What if someone bottled the water that millions in developing countries drink every day and offered it on the streets of New York? For just a buck, during World Water Week (March 22-29), New Yorkers in the Union Square Park area were able to enjoy the benefits of DIRTY WATER. It was available in a wide variety of choices like MALARIA, CHOLERA or even TYPHOID DIRTY WATER -- and currently has 900 million consumers. Over 4200 children die of water related diseases every day and millions of people around the world lack access to clean water resources. New Yorkers were startled to find YELLOW FEVER or HEPATITIS DIRTY WATER bottles. They looked at the vending machine in disgust. Though no one drank Dirty Water,many did donate to the cause. This idea of "selling" dirty water was inspired by UNICEF's promise that every dollar donated would provide safe drinking water to 40 children for a day. This eye-opening DIRTY WATER initiative from Casanova Pendrill New York, goes beyond collecting funds for UNICEF in a unique active street effort. The goal was to shock the media and the public with this alarming issue. The campaign is currently active since people can continue donating online at tapproject.org or via text message. Cholera plagues Afghanistan - 21 Oct 08
As if living in a country at war was not bad enough, the people of Afghanistan are battling a new outbreak of cholera. At least 20 people have been killed so far - most of them women and children. Health workers blame poor sanitation and a lack of clean water. Dan Nolan reports from Afghanistan.
Cholera prevention (in English)
Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by bacteria known as Vibrio cholerae. The main symptoms of this disease are diarrhea and vomiting. Transmission of cholera primarily occurs by consumption of contaminated food or drinking water. In this video we describe several techniques that can be used to help prevent cholera, including methods of treating water, washing of hands, and seeking medical advise if/when one has the symptoms of cholera. UN hit with cash demand over Haiti cholera
The United Nations has been hit with a demand for hundreds of millions of dollars in reparations because of a year-old cholera outbreak that has killed more than 6700 Haitians. The demand was made on Tuesday on behalf of more than 5000 Haitian cholera victims and their families in a petition filed at UN headquarters in New York by the Boston-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. The human rights group said the peacekeeping soldiers were not adequately screened by the United Nations. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from New York.

Cholera spreads when sanitation is poor. Organisms from sewage find their way into drinking water. It is caught by eating or drinking something that has been contaminated by the waste of a person who has Cholera. This disease causes diarrhoea, violent vomiting, and cramp. The victim looses liquid causing dehydration. The disease can kill but only if not treated straight away.

Bacteria, primitive single-celled organisms, communicate with chemical languages that allow them to synchronize their behavior and thereby act as enormous multi-cellular organisms. This process is called quorum sensing and it enables bacteria to successfully infect and cause disease in plants, animals, and humans. Investigations of the molecular mechanisms underlying quorum sensing are leading to the development of novel strategies to interfere with quorum sensing. New Cholera Vaccine Created
Indias National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) has developed a new cholera vaccine. This new vaccine is a path-breaking achievement for Indian scientists as they got the US patent in just ten months. [Dr. Amit Ghosh, NICED]: This is the only patent outside USA and nobody else has done this outside USA and we did it." India is one of the major hotspots of Cholera in the world and scientists hope the new vaccine will help thousands of people affected each year. [Dr. GB Nair, Director, NICED]: "In the past month only we have investigated six outbreaks outside the country. So what people don't seem to understand is that there is a lot of Cholera and there is a need for a public tool to lessen the burden of cholera in the country." Cholera is caught from eating bad meat or drinking polluted water. It can kill a patient within days after the victim looses massive amounts of bodily fluids. Major hotspots for cholera include Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and much of Africa.
