Very rare moving pictures of Bristol (UK) filmed 80 years ago. A world in which old cars, buses, lorries and motorcycles share the roads with trams and a surprising number of horses and carts. A charabanc and even a hand-pulled cart are glimpsed. Policemen direct traffic, women exhibit the 'flapper' look, men wear hats or caps. The Bristol Blenheim was a British light bomber aircraft designed and built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company that was used extensively in the early days of the Second World War. It was adapted as an interim long-range and night fighter, pending the availability of the Beaufighter. It was one of the first British aircraft to have all-metal stressed-skin construction, to utilise retractable landing gear, flaps, powered gun turret and variable pitch propellers. A Canadian-built variant named the Bolingbroke was used as an anti-submarine and training aircraft. The Blenheim Mk I outshone most biplane fighters in the late 1930s but stood little chance against the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 during daylight operations, though it proved successful as a night fighter. The Mark IV variant was equally unsuccessful, suffering major losses in the early stages of the war. The Dovells were an American music group, formed at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1957, under the name 'The Brooktones'. The members were Arnie Silver, Mark Gordesky, Len Borisoff, Jerry Gross, Mike Freda and Jim Mealey. Their first single was "No, No, No", which was a minor local hit for The Brooktones, who soon broke up. Summers and Dennis left the group, forming The Gems with Mark Stevens and Alan Horowitz in 1960; while the remaining Brooktones signed to the Chancellor record label and added Jerry Serlen and William Shunkwiler to the group, while changing the name to The Dovells. Their first hit was "Bristol Stomp", a dance song followed by the similar hit "Do the New Continental". "Bristol Stomp" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. They appeared performing both songs in the Chubby Checker movie Don't Knock The Twist in 1961. They released a series of singles over the next few years. These included "You Can't Sit Down", a #3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. Len Borisoff left in 1965 for a solo career under the name Len Barry. The high point of his solo career was "1-2-3" in 1965. The Dovells continued as a trio, and recorded as The Magistrates for MGM in 1968. Bristol got on the mechanical bull and rode it, but as she fell off, an apparently inebriated dude from the bar started shouting things to her such as "Your mother is a whore!" "Did you ride Levi like that?" and "Your mother is af***ing devil." Well, Bristol was not happy and wasn't having any of that, especially in front of her film crew. She quickly walked over and confronted the man, asking him if he was homosexual -- and at one point, apparently even taunting him - and both began shouting and arguing. Johnny Bristol was one of the mainstays of my entire Motorcity project. I recorded ten songs with him, but wrote about fifty, including songs for The Contours, The Monitors, The Satintones, and many many others. I had intended to re-record "Man Up In The Sky" for Barrett Strong, but Barrett wanted way too much money, and Johnny begged to do the song, and it became one of our biggest records. He also recorded his classic song "What Does It Take To Win Your Love" for us, which he had originally written for Junior Walker, and he re-recorded his biggest ever hit for us, "Hang On In There Baby", which I am proud to finally add to the video footage we filmed of him in 1990, when I got him over to England to appear at Great Yarmouth in the autumn of that year, which is when this performance was filmed. Johnny Bristol was a fine singer and songwriter, with his songwriting taking precedence in his early career at the Motown Records imprint. Johnny was later to marry Iris Gordy and become an 'actual' part of the Motown family. He began his career in 1960 as part of the duo of Johnny And Jackie. Johnny met Jackie Beavers during a period of National Service in the US Air Force. The duo recorded the first version of the tune 'Someday We'll Be Together' for Gwen Gordy and Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi Imprint. The Supremes' version later reached the National Charts later in the decade in 1969, with Johnny pitching in on background vocal chores. Johnny stayed with Motown for the duration of <b>...</b>

Bristol Freighter ZK-CPT - First Taxi In 20 Years In 1986 the Bristol Freighter ZK-CPT ('Merchant Courier') was flown into Omaka Aerodrome (Blenheim, New Zealand) and retired. The aircraft engines were subsequently run on several occasions, but this has not occurred for over 20 years. Enter Alastair Marshall - ex RNZAF Engine Technician, now commercial pilot, and a piston engine enthusiast. Over the past few months, Al has been working on the two Bristol Hercules engines on the aircraft, with the goal of getting the old girl to come to life once more. On 27th September 2008, both engines were fired up, and the aircraft taxied about on Omaka Aerodrome for the first time in approximately twenty years.
