Blues Genealogy: "Sweet Home Chicago" - Blues Guitar Lessons - David Hamburger

FULL POST w/ tab: su.pr David Hamburger - truefire.at Over the years I've had the pleasure of teaching at various workshops in the company of some fabulous blues guitarists, including Paul Rishell, Steve James and Duke Robillard, among others. I've always soaked up as much as I could from these experiences, realizing early on that as long as no one who was paying me to teach realized just how much I was actually learning myself, I was pretty much sitting on so much velvet. The thing I've always envied about these guys is their hands-on connection to the past. Steve's got stories about backing up Furry Lewis onstage in Memphis in the early '70s. Duke told me once how he got called up to sit in with Muddy Waters, while Freddie King was already onstage too, and Freddie proceeded to glower at Duke the entire time for messing with his own Muddy moment. "And Freddie was a big guy!" laughed Duke. But the best of all are Paul Rishell's stories about backing up Howlin' Wolf in Boston, also in the early '70s. After one session, one of the other musicians asked Wolf if he had any words of wisdom for a young, up and coming bluesman. Wolf looked the afro'd and dashiki'd guitarist up and down and growled, "Yeah! Throw them pedals in the river on the way to the barber shop!" So I wish the things I am about to tell you, I learned from hanging with Robert Lockwood Jr., sitting in with Roosevelt Sykes, and catching Magic Sam at his incendiary Ann Arbor Blues Festival appearance in the ...

GUITAR SHORTY - "I'm Gonna Leave You!" from the CD "Watch Your Back" - Texas Blues Guitarist.

Guitar Shorty - Blues in His Blood Guitar Shorty was born David William Kearney on September 8, 1939 in Houston, Texas and raised in Kissimmee, Florida by his grandmother. Guitar Shorty began playing guitar as a young boy, excited by the sounds of BB King, Guitar Slim, T-Bone Walker and Earl Hooker. His first lessons came from his uncle, but when it became clear that the youngster was serious about his music, his grandmother hired a tutor for him. After a move to Tampa when Guitar Junior was 17, he won a slot as a featured guitarist and vocalist in Walter Johnson's 18-piece orchestra. Being younger - and shorter - than the rest of the band, the club owner bestowed the name Guitar Shorty on him, and it stuck. After a particularly strong performance in Florida, the great Willie Dixon, who was in the audience, liked what Guitar Shorty was doing and got him in the studio. A few weeks later Guitar Shorty was in Chicago and, backed by Otis Rush on second guitar, he cut his first single, Irma Lee b/w You Don't Treat Me Right, for Chicago's famed Cobra Records in 1957. After recording the Cobra single, Guitar Shorty's fortunes continued to rise, as the great Ray Charles hired the young guitar slinger as a featured member of his road band. While touring Florida, Guitar Shorty met one of his idols-guitarist/vocalist Guitar Slim. Guitar Slim's manager offered Guitar Shorty the opening slot on the guitarist's upcoming tour, and Guitar Shorty jumped at the chance, following his hero ...

Tommy McClennan, born in 1908 near Yazoo, Mississippi, was a small man, standing just 4 feet 10; He suffered from alcoholism, something that is evident in the sound of his singing on his recordings. He recorded 41 sides for the Bluebird label, and his big hit was "Bluebird Blues", because the theme of the song expressed a desire to return to the South, a sentiment shared by many newly transplanted African-Americans at the time. He is reported to have died in poverty in Chicago around 1962. "Shake 'em On Down" is played with a capo on the second fret and centers around a driving D chord riff with a great left hand rhythm part including open strings.

Acoustic Guitar Blues "September " !!! Excellent performance by Yannick Lebossé

Acoustic Blues guitar. is the name given to both a musical form and a music genre[1] that originated in African-American communities of primarily the "Deep South" of the United States at the end of the 19th century from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads.[2] The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll is characterized by specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues chord progression is the most common. The blue notes that, for expressive purposes are sung or played flattened or gradually bent (minor 3rd to major 3rd) in relation to the pitch of the major scale, are also an important part of the sound. The blues genre is based on the blues form but possesses other characteristics such as specific lyrics, bass lines and instruments. Blues can be subdivided into several subgenres ranging from country to urban blues that were more or less popular during different periods of the 20th century. Best known are the Delta, Piedmont, Jump and Chicago blues styles. World War II marked the transition from acoustic to electric blues and the progressive opening of blues music to a wider audience, especially white listeners. In the 1960s and 1970s, a hybrid form called blues-rock evolved. The term "the blues" refers to the "blue devils", meaning melancholy and sadness; an early use of the term in this sense is found in George Colman's one-act farce Blue Devils (1798).[3] Though the use of ...

Blues Guitar Lessons - Blues Alchemy - David Hamburger - Swamp Funk Rhythm 4

FULL COURSE, TAB, JAM TRACKS: truefire.at More Free Guitar Lessons: bit.ly On Facebook - www.truefire.com This is basically a hot-rodded Jimmy Reed riff. Chicago bluesman Reed played sang, played guitar and harmonica, and wrote "Bright Lights, Big City," "Big Boss Man" and other tunes without which the modern bar band would wither and expire. He played shuffles and straight-eighth feels in a deceptively simple style that grooved hard and sold many records. I nicked the harmonization that goes up to the 7th and 9th from the playing of Louisiana guitarist Kenny Neal.
