The yellow branch lifter and divider feeds the bushes into the shakers, maximizing harvest. The twin shakers agitate the bushes, removing the currants without damaging the plants. The picker has steerable rear wheels and draw bar making reversing at the end of rows much easier. Cleaning fans remove the leaves leaving clean fruit ready to be frozen and processed. I picked a load of blackcurrants from my allotment veg garden and decided to use a few to try to make some liqueur from them. Based on the French Creme de cassis but not exactly. I mashed up half a pound of fresh blackcurrants and a quarter of a pound of sugar then added half a bottle of Vodka. After only a few minutes it had turned a dark purple colour so after a couple of months storage and a quick strain it should be pretty good stuff.

To make sorbet: Get lots of your chosen fruit and turn it into pulp. (You can do this in a blender if you want.) Citrus sorbet is common as it's refreshing, but I've done cherry, raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant... any juicy fruit is fair game. Fill a decent-sized pan about 1/3 to 1/2 full with water (depending on how much you want) and heat it. Add 500g (about 2 cups) to 1kg (about 4 cups) granulated sugar, depending on how sour your fruit is. Blackcurrants, raspberries etc need more sugar because they're more tart. Stir in the sugar slowly as you're heating the water, then keep stirring until it's all gone. Add the fruit and boil them together for five or ten minutes, stirring it all up. Pour the concoction through a sieve into heat-proof, freezer-proof containers. Bin (or compost) the fruit pulp, and pop the liquid in the freezer. The next day, juice some lemons - if you've got ice cream tubs like I have, use three or four lemons per tub. If you made lemon sorbet, you don't need to add more lemon juice. You've already got that sorted. Scrape all the sorbet into the blender (this might take a bit of doing) and pour the lemon juice over it. Blend it until smooth, then pour it back into the tubs and put it back in the freezer. It should take about 6 hours or so to re-freeze properly. Serve to your family. Video their reactions. Picked the first batch of gooseberries and blackcurrants tonight. It's a bit tricky picking spikey gooseberries whilst holding the camera and not getting pricked by the thorns as you'll see. Got quite a few blackcurrants too. Really happy with how the fruit has grown this year and the Plum Tree is ridiculous.

The Black Currant is another in my series on he nutraceutical plants that can be used as both for food and medicine. Black currants are a perennial species of the Ribes berry native which is native to central and northern Europe and northern Asia. The fruit has extraordinarily high vitamin C content (302% of the Daily Value per 100 g, table), good levels of potassium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin B5, and a broad range of other essential nutrients. The big deal is that phytochemicals (polyphenols/anthocyanins) are contained in the the fruit and have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments to have the potential to inhibit inflammation mechanisms suspected to be at the origin of heart disease, cancer, microbial infections or neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease. Yes you heard that right to inhibit neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease. Blackcurrant seed oil is also rich in many other nutrients, especially vitamin E and several unsaturated fatty acids including alpha-linolenic acid and gamma-linolenic acid. Culinary uses mostly include the making of jams, jellies or preserves but also in beverages. In fact in the UK they make a blackcurrant cordial mixed with cider to make a drink called "Cider and Black". The addition of lager results in "Diesel" or "Snakebite and Black" available at pubs.
