Dillinger Died Here
The Biograph Theater on N. Lincoln in Chicago, Illinois. In 1934 bank robber and murderer John Dillinger was shot to death in the alley next to the Biograph. Dillinger had been set up by a prostitute, Anna Sage, who tried to bargain her way out of deportation. The head of the Chicago FBI, Melvin Purvis, made no promises to her other than a vague, "we will see what we can do". Sage telephoned Purvis to tip off the FBI that Dillinger and her would be at the movies. Sage was to wear a yellow dress to help make identification easier. (The yellow dress under the colored lights of the theater marquee gave off a reddish/pink cast, hence "the lady in red".) Purvis and several G-Men were waiting outside the theater. The movie that night was "Manhatten Melodrama, starring Clark Gable, ironically a gangster flick. Dillinger was seemingly relaxed when he first exited the front of the theater, but he saw something, or his always sharp instinct warned him, and he decided to bolt down, in a Southern direction,down the street. At the alley he ran east. Just as he made entrance to the alley shots rang out and John Dillinger dropped dead. Word on the street spread quickly and soon a throng of people pressed by the FBI to view the bloody tableau. Folks even dipped their handkerchiefs into the pooling blood in order to have a souvenir. The era of bloody Midwest bank robbers was coming to an end. Sage ended up getting deported anyway. Purvis enjoyed a few years of fame but died at age 56 <b>...</b>

Bonine When it was completed, the Fuller (Flatiron) Building (1901-1903) was the tallest skyscraper north of the financial district. The building stands twenty-one stories tall including the attic story measuring 307 feet. The Broadway front is 190 feet wide, The Fifth Avenue front is 173 feet wide, and its nearly 87 feet wide on the 22nd Street side. Its north end is one-bay point, prompting a description as the slenderest building in New York. - A Wonderful Building, New York Tribune Illustrated Supplement, June 29, 1902 Designed by DH Burnham and Company (Chicago), the Fuller Building is an important early skyscraper and a New York City landmark. Known as the first great steel-framed building, the exterior of the lower three stories is stone, with the remainder clad in terra cotta. The Flatiron joined Hardenbergh's Western Union Building across Fifth Avenue and the Metropolitan Life Building and Madison Square Garden on the east and north sides of Madison Square. George Dixon vs Chester Leon 1906 Biograph Film Company The Fight One of the few truly 19th century boxing champions caught on film, George Dixon (1870-1908) was the first black world boxing champion in any weight class, while also being the first ever Canadian-born boxing champion. This is the only surviving footage of Dixon in action, and captures him at the end of his career. The Movie This genuine three round fight between Dixon and journeyman Chester Leon was staged by The Biograph film Company. Unlike other staged fight films of the period, the battle appears legit, though the knockdown is not convincing. As fight films became popular at the turn of the century, it was common for boxers, even in genuine fights, to fake knockdowns to boost the film's appeal. Photographed May 21, 1905. American Mutoscope and Biograph Co. Camera: GW "Billy" Bitzer The urban future is here in this two part film of western modernization. The subway, which opened on October 27th 1904, was barely seven months old when film maker Billy Bitzer mounted a camera on the front of a new electric subway train. The camera follows behind an Interboro Rapid Transit train (IRT), from the new 14th Street (Union Square) subway station, all the way up the east side to midtown at 42nd Street, pulling into the old Grand Central Terminal six minutes later. The scene is lit by a specially constructed work car running along side the star of this film. 'Modern Times' indeed. When it was completed in 1871 Cornelius Vanderbilt's Grand Central Terminal was the largest rail facility in the world. By 1904 New York had become the city it was destined to be. Even Grand Central could no longer keep up, the expansion of the American railroad system combined with the city's own growth in rail transportation was too large. Despite the changes and additions to the terminal in 1898 major revisions would have to be made. 1904 would see the beginning of a major renovation project for GCT that would see completion in 1913. Unknown to most at the time, consolidation of the city in 1898 would put the notion of slowing down at night to rest. After processing the new citizens would board boats and ferries that would take them on the last leg of their long journeys to the Battery on Lower Manhattan. One third of all immigrant arrivals settled in or near New York. The rest made their ways to the rest of the country. Ellis Island is in Upper New York Bay, near the coast of New Jersey. Named for Samuel Ellis, who acquired the island in 1785, it was purchased from his heirs in 1808 by the State of New York and turned over to the federal government. -TR New York City in 1906: Joseph W.
