Avant tout, il faut se rappeler qu'à l'origine Max Emil von Stephanitz, le père du berger allemand, avait dans l'idée de créer une race différente de ce qui existait à la fin du XIX ème siècle, un chien bon et beau à la fois, qui saurait relever le défi de la polyvalence. Il partit à l'époque de deux types de chiens de berger très opposés mais complémentaires pour finir par obtenir ce que nous connaissons aujourd'hui. Là où Von Stephanitz fût particulièrement visionnaire, c'est que contrairement aux autres cynophiles de l'époque, il comprit que seule une sélection rigoureuse basée sur les qualités de caractère et de morphologie, deux critères aussi primordiaux l'un que l'autre, pourraient permettre l'utilisation optimum de son chien mais qu'il ne fallait pas non plus négliger le coté esthétique. Un siècle plus tard, le patrimoine est intact : son berger allemand réussit la prouesse d'allier en toute harmonie une belle anatomie et un caractère sûr au service du travail.
