This is the Southern Hemisphere equivalent of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Filmed during the Antarctic winter in the general vicinity of McMurdo Station and Scott Base, where the sun is below the horizon for 4 months of the year. Most of the individual clips here were each taken over about a 10 minute period to give you an idea of how much they were moving in real time. These sequences of frames were taken at the rate of one frame per second, therefore the slower speed of the video represents more closely the true speed of the International Space Station than previous videos. This video was taken by the crew of Expedition 30 on board the International Space Station. The sequence of shots was taken January 29, 2012 from 10:18:13 to 10:31:28 GMT, on a pass from the North Pacific Ocean, approximately 1000 miles west of California, to western Quebec. This video begins as the ISS is passing over the dark waters of the North Pacific Ocean northeast towards Vancouver Island. The Aurora Borealis can be seen far north, where both the under side and top of the aurora are visible. The pass continues over Canada until the sun begins to come up in the east while over Quebec. The aurora borealis is also called the northern polar lights, as it is only visible in the sky from the Northern Hemisphere, the chance of visibility increasing with proximity to the North Magnetic Pole, which is currently in the arctic islands of northern Canada. It occurs often in Scandinavia as well. In addition, it is possible to see it during the day (it happens at all times but it is harder to see) and in different areas of the world. In fact, some rare occurances of the aurora borealis have mistaken people to take them for UFOs. The Aurora Borealis forms at around 60 miles high (around 100 km) which makes the lights visible hundreds of kilometers away. The cause for this phenomenon is electrons hitting air particles, causing them to light up. The colour depends on the altitude Green - oxygen, up to 150 miles in altitude Red - oxygen, above 150 miles in altitude Blue - nitrogen, up to 60 miles in altitude Purple/violet - nitrogen, above 60 miles in altitude There is also the existence of the aurora australis (or the southern lights) which has almost identical features to the aurora borealis and is visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America and Australia. After chasing it for more than two years I was finally rewarded with two displays of Aurora Australis (Southern lights) within a week visible from Mornington peninsula, not far from Melbourne. The nights were warm an clear and the Moon was not in the sky either - I could not have asked for better conditions. The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun's activity increases in 2012-13. Being able to photograph it all night I came up with a nice video. The brighter Aurora happened on January 22nd and the smaller one, featured in the middle section, was from January 16th, followed by a rather bright Moonrise. This day literally came at the end of our trip to Tornado Alley. And what a way to end it! Dave Lewison, Mark Robinson and I were chasing near Beatrice, NE earlier this day, and we were on an amazing supercell thunderstorm that did in fact produce a tornado. We briefly witnessed this tornado but as the storm began to weaken, our attention soon turned to the storms that were firing west of us...I mean WAY west of us near Grand Island. A decision had to be made, do we pursue the storms in our area, in the hopes that another one would take shape, or perhaps the storm that we were on would re-intensify and possibly produce a tornado again....or do we haul it to the Grand Island storm. Thankfully we made the decision to head to Grand Island! We skirted the Kansas/Nebraska state line until we hit our north road option which would take us right to I-80 in the town of York, NE. We arrived in York around 6 or 630pm if memory serves me right and immediately got on the 80 heading west towards Grand Island. The storm was right in front of us and it looked amazing! The anvil was spreading out right on top of us, and the updraft base was visible in the distance. At this point we were still a good 50 miles from the storm, and reports began to come in that it had already produced a tornado. We were just hoping that it would still have some left for us by the time we got there. Thankfully the speed limit on I-80 was 75mph, we made good time and arrived near the town of Alda, NE right as <b>...</b>

During a solar storm in 2012, a web site in Sweden was broadcasting stills of the Aurora Borealis. I captured the stills, edited them together as a time-lapse movie with some frame blending in Adobe After Effects, then added a soundtrack from the wonderful Polyphonic Spree. This is real time footage of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, filmed using a Sony PMW-F3 camera on the night of the 24/25th of January 2012. The motion in the Aurora is real time, this is what we saw and witnessed when we watched the Northern Lights from our base camp at Ravnastua, Norway. I run tours to photograph and video the Aurora every year. This was one of the best displays I have ever seen. It was the result of a CME, a release of charged particles from the sun that collided with the earths magnetic field and created a glowing ring of light around the North and South poles. The next couple of years should see more of these incredible Aurora as we approach the peak of the 11 year solar cycle.
