Arles on the River Rhône and it's surroundings were an inspiration for the painter Vincent Van Gogh, who arrived there in 1888, but it was here that his mental health deteriorated and at the end of that year came the infamous ear-severing incident.

Begin at the most prominent landmark, the Roman amphitheater, or arena, called the Arènes dArles, one of seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in town. Rue de la Calade brings us to the center of the Old Town, the Place de la République. Nearby, the Musée de lArles Antique displays treasures from the Roman period. We see everything in this detailed visit, including a look at the underground Cryptoporticos Museum of Arles.

Arles near the mouth of the Rhone delata in Provence was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire. It was also the starting point of the southernmost French route to Compostela. The cathedral housed the relics of Saint Trophimus, first bishop of the city, allegedly sent by Saint Peter himself, to evangelise the region. The heavily sculpted facade draws heavily on the style of Classical Antiquity. The central tympanum features an Apocalyptic vision of Christ in Majesty. The large sculpted reliefs on the first level are the Apostles. Saint James holding the Gospel inscribed Iacobus. Trophimus is included in the college of the Apostles, indentifiable by his bishop's mitre.
