Both Playsport models were set at 1080P mode at 30 fps. Overall conclusion - While the ZX5 sports some new features (but leaves out the HDMI cable unless you register the camera with Kodak and pay a shipping fee), I still think you'll get a better value for the ZX3 at a much lower price. You may notice that the ZX5 picks up more sound compared to the ZX3 outdoors with the birds chirping in the background, but it seems like the reproduction of my voice sounds cleaner on the ZX3 (especially important for me when I watch the footage with a good audio system) besides having better image quality than the ZX5. It's your call on which is better. On an added note regarding the ZX5's internal battery, even though you do get more life on a full charge compared to the ZX3's detachable battery (nearly double set at 1080P), replacement batteries are inexpensive from third party manufacturers which makes the ZX3 more flexible, especially during long video sessions where you may not have the luxury (or time) to recharge the ZX5's internal battery everywhere. Update (Aug. 26, 2011) - I'm learning that any camera that uses the more aggressive mp4 (ie Kodak ZX5) or AVCHD format is subject to a compromise in sound quality compared to the less-compressed .mov (ie Kodak ZX3) and MPEG-2 formats. By sound quality, I mean accuracy of reproducing natural sound. The biggest test is by recording bass at relatively loud volume levels (ie concerts) without distortion. EDIT: While snorkeling in Hawaii the Kodak ZX3 broke down. The control unit does not respond to input anymore. Out of guarantee. I recommend the Playsport series for pool use only. Windsurfing Lac Bay Bonaire in 2010 using the Kodak ZX3 Playsport with a Gorillapod on the Tabou Rocket 105, JP Supersport 65 and 69 and the JP Funride 130 with Ezzy Freerider 4 sails. This was my 1st test run of the Kodak Zx3 Play Sport's underwater capabilities. The video is just RAW footage cut together with the ORIGINAL resolution and frames per second on display that was recorded at the time. I've used Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to render the final video which doesn't seem to support 60fps (well I haven't been able to find that option as yet!) so the you tube version is 1280 x 720p resolution at 29.97 fps. So I know it's not a great video but it's purely out there for people to see what the Kodak Play Sport is like on a family outing at the beach. Please note that on the day it was quite windy and the Play Sport was hand held, the waves were fairly strong on the day so apologies for the shaky footage. I also didn't have a snorkel kit so I was basically aiming the camera underwater without being able to see the screen display to frame up subjects. In the future I'd want to use a heavy (weighted down) mini tripod base to secure the Play Sport underwater so that it isn't affected by the waves. I'll also invest in a snorkel set so that I can frame what I'm trying to record. I believe you'd be able to get some good quality footage underwater with the correct planning and organisation. But for every day family and friends outings at the beach you can't go wrong with the Kodak Zx3 Play Sport. Also note that at the very first shot (of the sandy beach) you may be able to see some rolling or flickering at the bottom of the screen of the video. I seem to get <b>...</b>

Unboxing of the waterproof Kodak Playsport Zx3 hd camera. This full hd 1080p camera is extremely sturdy and well built. It is waterproof up to 3 meters (10ft) and has a dedicated setting for filming under water. Compared to the Zi8 it is lacking a macro mode and port for attaching an external microphone, but it has the great benefit of being waterproof and being a bit cheaper as well. The Playsport is better than the Flip because it has a removable battery, which means that you can take a spare battery to swap out during filming, and it also stores the video on an SD card. What makes the Kodak Playsport truly unique is the fact that it can be used under water (great for on holiday!).

Testing out the Zx3 to see if it will work for filming snowboarding. So far the footage looks good. This was taken on a snowy, cold and windy day at Keystone resort in late Nov. Battery life held up in the cold. This is shot without a wide angle or fisheye lense. First time using this camera so the footage is a little shaky. Overall impressed.

Kodak CLAIMS the camera is waterproof up to 10 feet. So how did it handle a very rainy night? I was soaking wet, my wallet was soggy, my watch foggy, my phone spotty, my underwear clingy... The video camera only needed to be wiped dry. No water had found its way inside the camera whatsoever. The Zx3's low light performance was way better than I would have expected from such a little thing. Granted its overall performance was far from perfect, but at least it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the horrendous Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1. The Zx3's sound quality however is an entirely different story. I'll get into that in more detail during the review. Recorded at 1080/30p (highest quality setting) with the electronic image stabilizer turned off.

Jan 11th 2011. Testing out the new fish eye on my ZX3 kodak Playsport. I got this lens from deals extreme for $15 plus shipping and I think it's quality. Makes shooting action much easier than with out it. Definatly think this camera is worth the money. Shoots great action footage. Again, make sure to get the fastest SDHC card for this camera. It make a big difference. Not bigger. Faster. This was shot with a sandisk 8gb 30mb/s.
