Shelby F. "Sheb" Wooley (April 10, 1921 -- September 16, 2003) was a character actor and singer, best known for his 1958 novelty song "The Purple People Eater". This song was also successful for him in 1963 when the hootenanny fad hit in Australia after the film of the same name was released..

Sheb Wooley released music and performed as Ben Colder as well as under his own name. Wooley had intended to record the song "Don't Go Near The Indians", but he was delayed by an acting job. Meanwhile, Rex Allen recorded the song and it was a hit. Wooley said he did not mind - he would do the sequel. His song was so successful he continued using the name for forty years, one of his last recordings being "Shaky Breaky Car"

After teaching it to both the locals and the international volunteers, she took it to the streets. This novelty song, about an alien creature coming to Earth because it wants to perform in a rock and roll band, was a number one hit for Sheb Wooley in 1958. He took less than an hour to write it after getting the idea from a joke told by a friend's child. There appears to be some ambiguity in that the creature is generally thought of as being purple in colour and dangerous because it eats people, but in fact it is perfectly safe - for earth's inhabitants at least - as it quite clearly points out that it only eats purple people! The song refers to various other hit songs from that time, such as "Short Shorts" (The Royal Teens, 1958), "Tequila" (The Champs, 1958) and "Tutti Frutti" (1955). I left out the "Tequila" bit though. Barry Cryer's cover was a number-one hit in Finland, where Sheb Wooley's version was not released for contractual reasons. Other artists who covered the song include Judy Garland, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Screaming Lord Sutch. As this is one of the songs I loved as a child, I consider it a children's song. A playlist of my children's songs is here: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords of my songs, please see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com

This was from our 2004 original space-aged musical-comedy, TRUE COLORS My First Trip To Mars! The story is about a group of astronauts who crash land on the red planet, and meet up with some racist Martians on their quest to find their way back home.

In this video I critique the photos sent in from Photographer Michael Wooley. Sorry for the advert at the start and end. These video critiques take me a good while to make so I am trying to get my moneys back. it is usually about 20 minutes of critiqueing, an hour of editing and 2 hours of uploading. As these videos dont get a huge amount of views I am letting youtube put up adverts at the start and mid way so it helps justify the time i am spending on the videos. hope the 15 seconds of adverts dont hurt your eyes too much.

There's things out there in the middle of them woods That make a strong man die from fright. Things that crawl and things that fly And things that creep around on the ground. And they say the ghost of Lucius Clay gets up and he walks around. But I couldn't believe it. I just had to find out for myself. And I couldn't conceive it 'Cause I never would have listened to nobody else. And I couldn't believe it. I just had to find out for myself There's some things in this world you just can't explain. [Spoken] The old man lived in the Wooley Swamp way back in Booger Woods. He never did do a lot of harm in the world, But he never did do no good People didn't think too much of him They all thought he acted funny The old man didn't care about people anyway All he cared about was his money.
