A simple tweak of the registry in Windows 7 (I have Windows 7 Starter) on my Acer Aspire One netbook (Intel 3150 video chip; upgraded to 2GB ram) allows an increase from 1024x600 screen resolution up to 1152x864. There is no panning or scrolling required. This tweak allowed me to run my PowerDirector 9 video editing software without my external monitor. If you do this, keep track of the number of entries in the registry with the 'Display1_DownScalingSupported' key and in which ones you changed the value from 0 to 1 in case you want to undo. Hope this helps some of you with the same problem I had - maybe some gamers out there also? I did notice a color mask artifact in my video preview window which did NOT show up in screen captures, video playback or effect video editing.
