Occupy Wall Street Protest Enters Second Week; 80 Arrested at Peaceful March

www. DemocracyNow.org - It is day 10 of the "Occupy Wall Street" campaign. On Saturday, more than 80 protesters were arrested as hundreds took part in yet another march to Wall Street. Many of them were committing civil disobedience by walking in the street, but some say they were on the sidewalk when officers with the New York City Police Department used nets and physical force to break up the crowd. Videos uploaded to YouTube show officers pepper-spraying protesters in the face from close range, punching demonstrators and dragging people through the street. Since Sept. 17, thousands have gathered near in New York City's financial district near Wall Street to decry corporate greed, many have said to have been inspired by other popular uprisings from Spain to the Arab Spring. On Sunday, protesters issued a communique calling for the resignation of the NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly, and for a dialogue with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Thousands rally in New York's 'Occupy Wall Street' protest

The system simply isn't working. That's the message from thousands of people around the world, furious at financial structures that have led to a global crisis. The Occupy Wall Street movement began in the US, and spread to Asia and Europe - where things got violent. The world marked October 15th as a coordinated day of action in solidarity with the New York-born movement. Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports from Manhattan's Times Square.

US Occupy protests 'could intensify'

Todd Gitlin, a professor of journalism and sociology at Columbia University in New York, spoke to Al Jazeera about the Occupy protest movement in the US. He said that the movement reflected "anger at the impunity with which the wealthy walked away from the consequences of having brought down the world economy." "It is anger at a system of inequality that has been entrenched and normal. There is a collective wish for a system that is more humane." He also said he expects Occupy protests to intensify in 2012. "I think well see more attempts to take over buildings that have been foreclosed. We will also see protests directed at specific banks, at specific political candidates."

Occupy Wall Street protesters shut down "Mockupation" set for "Law and Order SVU"

While cast and crew were waiting for their early wake up calls, about 100 Occupy Wall Street friends came to check out the "mockupation", going on in Foley Square. What twisted reality plot lines, will Dick Wolf's sweat shop writers, squeeze out, in the guise of entertainment. A few weeks after the illegal eviction, just blocks away, at Liberty Square, the "mockupy" at Foley Square was seen as disrespectful to all people that showed up. The kitchen was set up nicely though, oh craft services!! I think we were having a gluten free meal, this early morning. It wasn't clear if the art department, purposely misspelled signs, or they're just working too hard. One sign spelled "country", contry. Luckily, the NYPD's, acting lessons did not go unnoticed. The lighter, less riot gear, with still questionable civil rights issues, tied to the "mock" eviction that went on here, with the real threat of real arrest, brought back some memories, for some. They were talking about getting a group rate on head shots, to get in to the reshoots.
