TEDxZurich - Roman Gaus - Urban Farming

Urban agriculture has been real for decades, starting with the industrialization of Western Europe in the 20th century. Urban agriculture has been also well practiced in poor economies such as Cuba, where it serves as an important way of self-reliance. Today, with conventional agriculture "Big Ag" being at a cross-road in terms of its ecological impact on the environment and the increased food demand of a population growing to 9bn people by 2050, urban agriculture may very well be one key of a solution for the 21st century. As Roman explains, urban agriculture offers the solution to grow potentially enough food in the city to feed its entire population. What's more, it also creates healthier, wealthier and happier cities, offering consumers with fresh & quality food choices and access to better quality of life. Roman Gaus, Founder of UrbanFarmers Roman Gaus (32)- from corporate career to social entrepreneur & urban farmer. Roman's story is both fascinating and inspiring. When Roman returned from the States to Switzerland, he left a short but steep career with companies such as Procter & Gamble, Novartis and Franke Group. Yet, he brought with him an emerging concept about inner-city farming, which he had seen take a grass roots approach in US cities. Back in Switzerland, Roman was surprised by the proven, Swiss-engineered technology know-how of Aquaponic; a combination of fish and vegetable farming, ideally suited to grow locally grown & organic food without soil in the ...

Sustainable urban agriculture hydroponic vegetable greenhouse.dv

This video shows the Urban Food Farm from urbanfoodfarms.com It's a complete greenhouse kit system with hydroponics, irrigation, soil-less growing and a very efficient space layout to grow organic vegetables and herbs year round. The greenhouse floor plant is 8x12. Normally the greenhouse walls are clear polycarbonate but since it's been raining they are covered in condensation. We tried to show the inside of the greenhouse design and closeup of all the vegetable plants. Compare to the other videos taken 2 weeks and 3 weeks prior, the vegetable and herb plants grow fast. This video is from 12 it's hard to believe it's December, the plants are growing as if it was March. This video shows a close look of the tomato plants, all the herb plants like chives, basil, cilantro, mint and a few others, there are also cucumber, zucchini, squash, lettuce, micro greens and strawberry plants. Some of the plants we planted from seed on week 2 of the project and others like the older tomato and cucumber plants were brought from an older version of this vegetable hydrofarm. All of the vegetables grown are organic from hybrid seed. The greenhouse layout plan in this 8x12 hobby greenhouse offers 144 foot of hydroponic soil-less growing all done in coco coir. The combination of the greenhouse plan, the coco and the clear plastic walls allows this hydrofarm to grow as much as 6x more than the same space planted in the ground. The amount of work is also considerably less thanks to automated ...

Havana Homegrown: Inside Cuba's Urban Agriculture Revolution

This video from the nonprofit group KGI (KitchenGardeners.org ) looks at the urban agriculture revolution in Havana, Cuba and its origins. Cuba is not only an island nation in terms of its geography, but also its economy and politics as a result of the US embargo and the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba's largest source of trade and aid until the Berlin Wall fell in 1991. Cut off from the world's pipeline of food, oil, chemical pesticides and fertilizers, Cuba embarked upon an ambitious program to grow as much of its own organic food as possible in the 1990s during what was known as the "special period." This short video produced by the nonprofit group Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI) peeks into Havana's urban farms and gardens to see what lessons they have to offer other cities working to move toward sustainable food security. For more information on other homegrown solutions around the world, please see KGI's website here kitchengardeners.org

Ron Finley: Food Forest

This film tells the story of a South Los Angeles edible garden planted in a surprising spot. Ron Finley, its planter, constructed the garden the way he wishes his neighborhood could be. And his vision of repurposing unused open space, like that of many others working together on urban agriculture in our city, should inspire us all, and remind us of how, with a little creativity of vision, and willingness to get our hands dirty, we can remake spaces defined by asphalt and dead grass into productive places of beauty. Detroit Urban Agriculture Movement Looks to Reclaim Motor City

In Detroit, demolition crews are planning to tear down 10000 residential buildings over the next four years that the city has deemed dangerous. But as old structures are coming down, the city is redefining itself in other ways. An estimated 20 to 30 percent of the city's lots are vacant, and there is a growing urban agriculture movement that community groups are using to reclaim the city. Malik Yakini, chairman of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, gives us a tour of D-Town Farm, one of the biggest urban farms in Detroit. [includes rush transcript]

From the Earth to the Pot: Urban Agriculture & Food Security in Lima, Peru

Rapid urbanization and population growth in the shanty towns on the outskirts of Lima, Peru, where the majority of residents live in poverty and lack access to basic necessities such as potable water and adequate sanitation, has led to serious negative consequences on both human and environmental health. These trends, which are not unique to Peru but can be seen in urban areas of low-income countries throughout the world, have particularly devastating effects on household food security and nutrition. However, among many of Lima's poor neighborhoods, community-based solutions are emerging that tackle these problems in collaborative and sustainable ways. Food production within city limits has recently come to the forefront as a strategy to improve food security among poor, landless households. The capacity for engagement in urban agriculture is especially important when food access is compromised due to prevalent unemployment, under-employment and the fluctuating costs of basic food staples. Child malnutrition is becoming an increasingly important concern in the peripheral poor neighborhoods of Lima. It is therefore imperative to consider urban agriculture's potential to directly address the food and nutritional needs of poor families. Current urban farming projects in areas throughout Lima are generating greater access to fresh nutritious foods and are ultimately helping to break the cycle of poverty and hunger. Informed by local non-profit organizations and research ...

Feeding The Future - Part 1 Food Security

By 2050 more than twice as many of us will be living in cities. While urban agriculture of the community kind is on the rise, commercial urban farms are under threat. More than 60% of Sydney's fresh produce is grown close to the city, the bulk of it coming from commercial gardens. How we use urban land is shaping up as one of the biggest dilemmas of the 21st Century. A booming population needs to be housed, but it also needs to be fed, and the cost of relying on imported food is already being felt. Urban Initiatives, Urban Farming Movement in Detroit

Growing Food, Jobs and Community in Vacant Lots Urban agriculture is one of the keystones of resilience in cities, and in Detroit it might just remake the city's ravaged economy. The fall of the auto industry left about 40 square miles in America's 11th largest city empty. That is about the same amount of space as all of San Francisco. Vegetation began to spread and wildlife came back as nature took it's course. But it was abandoned, useless land. Now human nature is taking it's course! There is a thriving, vibrant urban gardening scene in that area. There are over 750 family and community gardens and small farms, and that number is growing all the time. Here is the story of Greg Willener, a former teacher turned urban farmer who is making a living from the land on less than 1/2 acre on his "Brother Nature Farm" in Corktown, Detroit. In this video, he speaks with great optimism about the ability to make a living growing organic food and connecting the community in the process. His farm and others are looking to develop a union of sorts, a collaboration between all the growers. "To me, the most exciting piece (re: local food initiatives) is that we're sharing skills and we're sharing ideas on how to make our local food taste better. To me, that's the best way to fight corporate America. Have a better product, have a healthier product. Have a product that takes less time and money ultimately to feed us. And we can do that. We have all this open land. We have all these ideas ...
