New Forecast: Sun's 'Superstorms' Could Doom Satellites One of the first images taken by SDO and still a favorite: A solar eruptive prominence as seen in extreme UV light on March 30, 2010. The superimposed image of the Earth gives a sense of just how large these eruptions can be. Magnetic storms set off by the sun could pose a bigger threat than thought to weather, communication, military and other satellites close to Earth, with a potentially devastating economic impact, scientists suggest. In the new study, researchers found that solar radiation can energize a belt of high-energy particles that surrounds Earth more dramatically than previously believed. The study focused on the possible effects of a particularly strong magnetic storm on the Van Allen radiation belts, the dangerous rings of high-energy particles that girdle the Earth. The belts are split into two distinct zones. The outer belt, which is made up of electrons, reaches from about 15800 to 31600 miles (25500 to 51000 kilometers) above the surface, while the inner belt, which consists of a mix of electrons and protons, reaches from about 4000 to 8000 miles (6400 to 12800 km) above. Scientists had known the outer belt could become far more intense during geomagnetic storms caused by high-energy particles spewed by the sun, such as the storm that supercharged Earth's northern lights display Monday night (Sept. 26). ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Initial reports from towns along Alaska's northwest coast early Wednesday indicated that a massive Bering Sea storm had tossed rocks onto roads, eroded beaches and blown off roofs — and that's before water surges expected to peak Wednesday night. In Nome, the largest town with 3600 residents, the main street was closed due to rock and log debris. Residents were told to stay off streets due to live wires from downed power lines, and a highway was feared cut by beach erosion. Roofs were also blown away overnight, when the height of snow and hurricane-force winds hit at about 2 am "Waves were hitting Front Street since after 1 am," Nome resident Penny Frieda Olanna posted on Facebook. "We could see the waves flying and our window is covered in sleet, the waves are splashing high." A voluntary evacuation earlier moved some residents from beachfront businesses and homes to shelters at a community center and a church.

An incredibly powerful storm is slamming the coast of Alaska. Streets have flooded, roofs have been ripped away, and citizens have lost power. The winds are on par with a hurricane, and weather watchers have called the storm the most powerful one to hit Alaska in nearly four decades. People caught in the storm have been capturing the chaos on video. One of the most compelling clips shows immense waves of water and mist battering the coast. Look closely and you'll see an excavator used in construction stuck under several feet of water. The National Weather Service has estimated that this system was as powerful as a Category 3 hurricane. PASADENA, Calif. -- Scientists analyzing data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft now have the first-ever, up-close details of a Saturn storm that is eight times the surface area of Earth. On Dec. 5, 2010, Cassini first detected the storm that has been raging ever since. It appears approximately 35 degrees north latitude of Saturn. Pictures from Cassini's imaging cameras show the storm wrapping around the entire planet covering approximately 2 billion square miles (4 billion square kilometers). The storm is about 500 times larger than the biggest storm previously seen by Cassini during several months from 2009 to 2010. Scientists studied the sounds of the new storm's lightning strikes and analyzed images taken between December 2010 and February 2011.
