Exploring derelict space ship in rare Soviet-style SF film

Here's an amazing scene from an ultra-rare, kitschy, trippy, Soviet-style SF film, Ikarie XB 1 (aka Ikaria XB1, Icarus XB1 and Voyage to the End of the Universe). Czechoslovakia's first science fiction film, this remarkable 1963 movie tells the story of Starship Ikaria XB 1's 2163 trek to Alpha Centari. ("Voyage" was the savagely cut, English dubbed version released by American International Pictures.) The film is generally apolitical, except for this remarkable scene, in which the explorers enter a derelict 20th Century space craft, littered with evidence of capitalist immorality. The visuals are striking. Corpses of tuxedo-clad, gambling westerners, their bodies preserved by open vacuum. The crew killed by their own chemical hand-weapons as they fought over dwindling oxygen. The ship laden with nuclear weapons -- still active after centuries. Ikarie XB 1 is an ambitious, thoughtful, intelligent film that was decades ahead of its time. It's an ultra-rare "must-see" for any serious SF fan, with high-concept elements galore: a trip to proxima centaura; time dilation; future foods, fashion, music and dance; first-contact protocols; increased longevity; artificial intelligence; bulky socialist robots. It's said the screenplay was inspired by the work of Stanislaw Lem, including "The Magellanic Cloud" from 1955. Soviet Reanimation Experiments

The provenance of this disturbing film from the late 40's is, at best, cloudy. While the narrator appears to be British the footage itself is clearly from the Soviet Union, as indicated by the Cryllic characters visible on the medical equipment, clocks, and doorways. The film itself documents several animal reanimation experiments, euphamistically referred to as "revival", beginning with individual organs and moving on to body parts and, eventually, a dead dog. Several sequences, in particular the undead head of a dog devoid of a body, are made even more chilling by the dry, matter-of-fact narration. The film seems to confirm speculation that Soviet forces seized several of the scientists involved in the Nazi reanimation efforts during the chaos of the post-war years.

Soviet/ USSR Anthem in English, with Soviet Videos (recorded from Victory Parade of 1945). By Paul Robeson. English lyrics of this version United forever in friendship and labour, Our mighty republics will ever endure. The great Soviet Union will live through the ages. The dream of a people their fortress secure. CHORUS: Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. Long live our People, united and free. Strong in our friendship tried by fire. Long may our crimson flag inspire, Shining in glory for all men to see. Through days dark and stormy where Great Lenin led us Our eyes saw the bright sun of freedom above and Stalin our Leader with faith in the People, Inspired us to build up the land that we love. CHORUS: Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. Long live our People, united and free. Strong in our friendship tried by fire. Long may our crimson flag inspire, Shining in glory for all men to see. We fought for the future, destroyed the invader, and brought to our homeland the Laurels of Fame. Our glory will live in the memory of nations and all generations will honour her name. CHORUS: Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. 'Georgia is a Soviet country'

Georgia under President Mikhail Saakashvili first underwent a spectacular reform, but has now turned back into a typical post-Soviet state, oppressing its own people, believes Nino Burdzhanadze, former parliamentary speaker, now an opposition leader. "In Georgia right now there's real neo-Bolshevism with all signs of a Soviet regime: violation of elementary constitutional norms, violation of elementary human rights, control of media, police, which [are] doing everything -- despite of their legal obligations -- [as] if it's coming from political decisions. It's a typical Soviet country, where every person who is against the regime is [called] enemy of the country," Burdzhanadze told RT. The only noticeable difference from the old Soviet times is that now the great enemy is Russia rather then world imperialism, she added. The police crackdown on Georgian opposition in late May was an example of how things are done in Georgia now, the opposition leader says. It was an operation to punish protesters, not to uphold the law, Burdzhanadze believes. "The Georgian special forces surrounded us. The people were in [a] trap. There was no way out. There was not possibility to leave the square. As we understand, special services received instructions to arrest all demonstrators... to beat people brutally, especially at their heads... It was a real punishment [meant] to threaten the people," she said. The image of Saakashvili, the brilliant reformer, is very strong in the West, so it ...

Aircraft Carrier Tbilisi (Soviet Film)

Admiral Flota Sovetskovo Soyuza Kuznetsov (Russian: Адмирал флота Советского Союза Кузнецов "Fleet Admiral of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov"), originally named Riga, renamed Leonid Brezhnev then Tbilisi) is an aircraft cruiser (heavy aircraft carrying missile cruiser (TARKR or TAVKR) in Russian classification) serving as the flagship of the Russian Navy. She was originally commissioned in the Soviet Navy, and was intended to be the lead ship of her class, but the only other ship of her class, Varyag, was never commissioned and was sold to the People's Republic of China by Ukraine under the condition she would never be refitted for combat. Kuznetsov was named after the Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov. While designated an aircraft carrier by the West, the design of the Admiral Kuznetsov' class implies a mission different from that of either the United States Navy's carriers or those of the Royal Navy. The term used by her builders to describe the Russian ships is tyazholyy avianesushchiy raketnyy kreyser (TAKR or TARKR) - "heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser" - intended to support and defend strategic missile-carrying submarines, surface ships, and naval missile-carrying aircraft of the Russian Navy. The Admiral Kuznetsov's main fixed-wing aircraft is the multi-role Sukhoi Su-33. It can perform air superiority, fleet defence, and air support missions and can also be used for reconnaissance and searching for naval mines. It is ...

Dmitry Orlov: Peak Oil Lessons From The Soviet Union

Dmitry Orlov, engineer and author, warns that the US's reliance on diminishing fuel supplies might be sending it down the same path the Soviet Union took before it collapsed. In this fifth video in the series "Peak Oil and a Changing Climate" from The Nation and On The Earth Productions, Orlov, who was an eyewitness to the collapse of the Soviet Union, asserts that run-away debt and national bankruptcy will lead the US to its demise, just as it did for Moscow. As oil becomes more expensive and scarcer, the US will no longer be able to finance its importation and the economy will hit a wall, he says. "Sixty percent of all of our transportation fuels are imported—a lot of that is on credit. A large chunk of the trade deficit is actually in transportation fuels. When those stop arriving because of our inability to borrow more money, then the economy is at a standstill," he says. Visit www.thenation.com to learn more about "Peak Oil and a Changing Climate," and to see the other videos in the series.

Soviet Union in the 1960s

Soviet Union en.wikipedia.org Stalin died on March 5, 1953. In the absence of an acceptable successor, the highest Communist Party officials opted to rule the Soviet Union jointly. Nikita Khrushchev, who had won the power struggle by the mid-1950s, denounced Stalin's use of repression in 1956 and eased repressive controls over party and society. This was known as de-Stalinization. Moscow considered Eastern Europe to be a buffer zone for the forward defense of its western borders and ensured its control of the region by transforming the East European countries into satellite states. Soviet military force was used to suppress anti-communist uprisings in Hungary and Poland in 1956. In the late 1950s, a confrontation with China regarding the USSR's rapprochement with the West and what Mao perceived as Khrushchev's revisionism led to the Sino-Soviet split. This resulted in a break throughout the global Communist movement and Communist regimes in Albania and Cambodia choosing to ally with China in place of the USSR. During this period, the Soviet Union continued to realize scientific and technological pioneering exploits; to launch the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1; a living dog, Laika; and later, the first human being, Yuri Gagarin, into Earth's orbit. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963, and Alexey Leonov became the first person to walk in space on March 18, 1965. CIA Archives: Soviet Psychological Torture Methods - Former Moscow Prison Inmate (1956)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Psychological torture is a type of torture that relies primarily on psychological effects, and only secondarily on any physical harm inflicted. Although not all psychological torture involves the use of physical violence, there is a continuum between psychological torture and physical torture. The two are often used in conjunction with one another, and often overlap in practice, with the fear and pain induced by physical torture often resulting in long-term psychological effects, and many forms of psychological torture involving some form of pain or coercion. Many forms of psychological torture methods attempt to destroy the subject's normal self-image by removing them from any kind of control over their environment, creating a state of learned helplessness, psychological regression and depersonalization. Other techniques include enforced nudity and head shaving, sleep deprivation, hooding and other forms of sensory deprivation and forcing the subject to adopt stress positions. A strictly fear-inducing method is the mock execution. Various threats operate on the same fear-inducing principle. Another is indirect torture, which preys on the victims affection for and loyalty to a partner, relative, friend, comrade in arms et cetera, whose real pain induces vicarious suffering in the targeted psychological victim, who is thus loaded with guilt but spared physical harm that might endanger his ability to comply. Soviet Afghanistan War (1975-1989) - Turner Productions (1998)

en.wikipedia.org news.bbc.co.uk "Cold War" (Episode #24, "Soldiers of God, 1975-1988"), Turner Original Productions (Time Warner), 1998 About the "Cold War" 24-episode series: If anything defined the 20th century as the age of anxiety, it's the cold war with its ultimate no-win nuclear endgame. While conflicts in Korea and Vietnam dragged on, providing the traditional images of modern warfare, some of the conflict's most dangerous battles were invisible--tactical, intellectual, and fought primarily in the minds and war rooms of US and Soviet leaders: Kennedy, Krushchev, Castro, Kissinger, Gorbachev, and Reagan. This 24-episode series, narrated by Kenneth Branagh, is a comprehensive history that examines the key events of the arc of the Soviet Union, from its birth to its fall, and provides a thorough analysis of what was going on behind closed doors. Informed by the stories of 500 eyewitnesses--from citizens and soldiers to historians and statesmen--and strengthened by painstaking reconstruction of archival historical film footage, "Cold War" is a heroic undertaking and a sweeping chronicle of the world's most fragile decades.
