No section of South Shore better demonstrates the neighborhood's issues with crime and squalor than "Terror Town," a four-block by four-block rectangle bounded by Yates and Colfax avenues and 75th and 79th streets. As seen in this video, it's the site of at least one open air drug market and dozens of boarded-up apartment buildings and retail spaces. For South Shore to rebound in the coming years, the problems of Terror Town will have to be addressed, says Jeff Heilbrunn, a South Shore native who now works at a marketing adviser with Builders Center of Chicago, which has converted several apartment buildings in the neighborhood.

youtube.com Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting Oahu's legendary shores, North Shore and South Shore, against each other. Top surfers from each shore battled it out in a head-to-head surf competition for ultimate island bragging rights. To keep things fair, the event was again held on the Eastside of Oahu at Sandy Beach, which is neutral territory and will be the last year at this location. Before the Red Bull Rivals 2009 competition, no surf event had been held at this popular surf location since the Gotcha Pro back in the early '80s. Instead of a traditional purse prize, the teams competed for each others' surfboards used in the competition (similar to racing for pink slips) and, of course, the winning team will earned the ultimate surfing bragging rights. This is a video of Metra Electric and CN Chicago Subdivision footage on Chicago's far Southeast Side. Both lines are ex. Illinois Central. The Metra Electric line is entirely electrified and runs from Chicago's Millenium Station (formerly Randolph St. Station) in downtown Chicago South to University Park. It is 31 miles in length and has 49 stations along it's route most of which being in Chicago city limits. The platforms are higher than track level since the doors are higher on the cars, giving the trains the nickname, "Highliners." From about 16th Street in Chicago to the end of the line in University Park, the CN/IC Chicago Subdivision freight line parellels it to the East. There are two branch lines off the main on the Metra Electric. One going to Blue Island at State Street and another one that goes to 93rd Street which starts at 71st and Stony Island Avenue, then curves it's way South. North of Kensington, there are express tracks, running in each direction so South Shore trains and express Metra's don't have to interfere with any train making a station stop. The equipment used is strictly passenger mostly being the older ex. Illinois Central smoothside bi-level electric MUs built by St. Louis Car Company in the 1970s. There are a few newer Nippon Shayro cars that resemble a coach on a diesel route with pantographs. Chicago South Shore shares the line North of Kensington and runs their single and bi-level MU's. East of Kensington, the South Shore runs all the way ...

Oh how sweet it is! Samuel Insull purchased the railroad at public auction in June, 1925 and renamed it The Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad. Insull immediately began a program of moderization which restored the railroad to top condition. Insull purchased new cars, built new stations, and converted the railroad from AC electric system to its current 1500 volt DC system. This was an important change, for new South Shore trains could operate directly and continuously over the trackage of the Illinois Central Railroad from Kensington to downtown Chicago, helping assure the South Shore's long term survival. The railroad remained privately owned with NICTD responsible for paying for the service. Under NICTD's tutelage, a steady series of improvements was funded and ridership increased from 1.48 million passengers carried in 1978 to over 3.5 million passengers at the turn of the century. The railroad is now in the hands of the public sector and profit is no longer the motivation for providing rail passenger service. NICTD operates the rail service as a public service because the people and economy of Northwest Indiana need an alternative, reliable form of transportation to get to jobs, schools, museums, and recreational opportunities found in the City of Chicago. NICTD has helped make the South Shore strong once again. In turn, by providing a balanced transportation system, the South Shore can help make, and keep, the Northwest Indiana economy strong.

Purchase at -- www.greenfrog.com By the late 1970s, the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad was living out the last years as a step-child of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The C&O had purchased the South Shore in 1965 as a bridge route for its freight business. A decade later, the drain on revenues from extensive passenger operations was taking its toll on the 91 mile railway running from downtown Chicago to South Bend, Indiana. Born shortly after the dawn of the twentieth century, the South Shore had been the sturdiest of Samuel Insull's network of Midwestern electric interurban railways and it managed to survive on that strength when all the others faded away. By 1976, the paint on the cars was chipped and frayed, and the many stations were becoming, well, a little run-down. Despite this, the South Shore rolled on in the hands of its capable employees. The South Shore Drill Team was the crowd favorite at the 2008 Persimmon Festival Parade in Mitchell Indiana. From their Web-site www.southshoredrillteam.org The South Shore Drill Team & Performing Arts Ensemble was established in 1980 by former Chicago Public School teacher, Arthur Robertson with only 4 members (Curtis Davis, Randall Robertson, Kevin Ray, and Darrell Jones). Today the organization has a membership count of 300+, ranging from ages 9-21. The team sees 99.5% of its high school students graduate, and nearly all go to college or technical school, breaking a cycle of poverty. The group was designed as an alternative to gang activity, high school drop outs, and teen pregnancy. The group offers young people an opportunity to develop self-esteem, self-discipline, goals for their future, and a chance to travel.

Riding the South Shore Line (Chicago, South Shore & South Bend RR, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District/NICTD) through E 11th St in Michigan City, Indiana. This is the last section of street-running on the last electric interurban railway in the country. The street trackage starts on the west side of town just past the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and continues down the middle of two city streets, to the South Shore Line/NICTD/SouthShore Freight diesel and electric shops, yard and offices, with one intermediate stop in the downtown area on 11th St. Speed through this section never quite gets above 25 mph, and local drivers are well-accustomed to trains running in the middle of the street. City, county and state leaders have been trying for decades to re-locate the interurban to off-street trackage on the north side of town, to no avail (so far!) Enjoy!

Credited as the last of the interurbans, the Chicago, South Shore, and South Bend runs a steady passenger business between Chicago, IL and South Bend, IN. Though they still run under the South Shore name, the passenger trains are operated by the North Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD). They also operate as a freight shortline in several of the communities along the line. The South Shore, in Michigan City, does street running on 11th Street and actually has one station stop on 11th Street.
