Il 20 agosto 2006, nel corso dell'incontro di campionato contro il Cruzeiro, ha realizzato una doppietta (un gol su punizione e uno su rigore) che gli ha permesso di superare José Luis Chilavert nella classifica dei portieri goleador, divenendo l'estremo difensore ad aver segnato più reti nella storia del calcio professionistico: 63 (record successivamente migliorato, attualmente i gol sono 78). Il paraguaiano Chilavert resta fermo a 62 centri, essendosi ormai ritirato dall'attività agonistica. Nazionale Rogério Ceni conta 16 presenze nella Nazionale brasiliana, con cui ha esordito nel 1997, senza mai segnare un gol. Ha partecipato ai Mondiali del 2002 (terzo portiere, nessuna presenza) e del 2006 (secondo portiere, una presenza).
