Salton Sea Documentary

As narrated by legendary counterculture filmmaker John Waters, there was time when the Salton Sea, tucked into the southeast corner of California was known as the Riviera of the West — a haven for jetsetters and vacationers. Originally created by accident, it's now called one of the country's worst ecological disasters: a fetid, stagnant, salty lake, coughing up dead fish and birds by the thousands. Still, a hardy few have hung on there, hoping for help to come along and restore the lake to its former glory. Congressman Sonny Bono himself was once dedicated to saving the lake, until he went skiing one day... Eccentrics abound in this surreal landscape: the naked guy who waves to passing RVs; the man who built his own holy mountain; beer-loving Hungarian Hunky Daddy; the guys who plan to get rich someday when this virtual sewer becomes a Riviera again. Hair-raising and hilarious, part history lesson, part cautionary tale and part portrait of one of the strangest communities you've ever seen, this is the American Dream gone as stinky as a dead carp.

The Accidental Sea

A short film about my favorite post-apocalyptic hell-hole, the Salton Sea. Music composed by Michael Picton. Download the song on CD Baby: www.cdbaby.com A few people have asked in the comments if I'm a writer. Yes I am! My first novel comes out in a few weeks, and can be pre-ordered here: www.amazon.com My equipment: Canon 5DmkII 24mm lens & 100mm lens Steadicam Merlin Final Cut Studio & Color An awesome composer named Michael Picton, who would probably object to being listed as "equipment" but also will probably not read this. Also, to those considering a visit to the salton sea, be warned that it can get up to 110-120 degrees, you'll be far from a garage should you break down, and it can smell pretty awful. Late fall and early spring are much better times to go!

Salton Sea Weekend Warriors

Out in the California desert the crew of RV Today met up with a group of weekend warriors, a growing trend of RVers who like to take their toys with them on an adventure. Bringing their ATVs, motorcycles and dune buggies, the weekend warriors like the wide open spaces to explore and blaze new trails. These RVers shun the luxury resorts and boondock where there is plenty of space to roam. No better place to roam free than the California desert near the Salton Sea. The sea has been getting bad rep, but youll put all those bad rumors aside when you take in the scenic views of the water on the east side. For the weekend warrior there is no better place than the Salton Sea to spend a vacation four wheeling and blazing trails.

This is some footage I shot of the very weird town on the bank of the Salton Sea. Its a total ghost town, and even though there are cars in the footage, I only saw a handful of random people (who stared us down). This was a Saturday afternoon, and the bar was closed, mini mart boarded up, and the church yard looked like a prison yard!

Just a trip to The Salton Sea Ca. 1/10/2009. This was once a hot spot with the tourists. Big movie stars would have their boats docked and hang out at the waterfront bars. The fishing was also good. Corvina, Talapia, Croaker and Sago. Now the sea has died along with most of the fish due to the salinity of the water.

Salton Sea Beach - part 1. Pink trailer and burnt palm trees and some of the abandoned trailer park

The Salton Sea is an incongruous sight: a huge body of water in the middle of a desert. And with good reason. California's largest lake was created purely by accident in 1905 when floodwaters from the Colorado River burst past a series of dams and settled in a naturally salty depression more than 228 feet below sea level. Ever since, the lake has been a Southern California oasis, rich in wildlife. Its future, however, is in doubt. The Salton Sea was once a popular place for boating, swimming, fishing, etc., but an increase in the salt level of the water caused large numbers of fish to die and the water became foul. This, in addition to a couple of hurricanes in the 1970's, caused the communities surrounding the sea to deteriorate. The Salton Sea was recently featured on Life After People on the History Channel. These days there are NOT that many dead fish on the shores - in fact, on doesn't really smell dead fish around the shores anymore. The Sea itself is technically safe to swim in. The lake is NOT polluted with sewage, rather there are times of year when the decaying algae blooms give off a surfer odor which only smells like sewage. I must say, again, that the smell from the lake has actually been decent lately. Salton Sea faults may trigger Big San Andreas Fault earthquake 7.5+

from Believersunderground Well Scott called it on 7/17/10 now its finally acknowledged on the news today a year later. Engineering of the Colorado River may have delayed an overdue large earthquake along the southern San Andreas Fault, UC San Diego researchers say in a new study. But as stresses keep building, faults under the Salton Sea may trigger a big quake anyway, the researchers said. The faults, some of which the researchers discovered, could trigger ruptures in a "strike-slip stepover zone," they said. That's the same fault configuration that triggered the disastrous 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Strike-slip faults are vertical or nearly vertical, caused when adjacent land blocks, or plates, move horizontally. They are a common cause of earthquakes in California, said Neal Driscoll, a study author and professor at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography. A stepover zone is an area where faults are close enough that movement on one can trigger another. "Such an event could propagate northward, producing strong shaking and significant damage to the Los Angeles metropolitan area," said the study, published online Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience. Simulations of northward-trending earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault indicate that they will be more damaging than any going south, the paper said. "We've learned if we start the fault propagating from south to north, large metropolitan areas like Riverside and Los Angeles will experience more ground shaking ...

Salton Sea North Shore Beach & Yacht Club Grand Reopening. Restored to its former glory.

Public welcome. 99-155 Sea View Drive, North Shore, CA 92254 www.SaltonSeaMuseum.org for more information Abandoned for a few decades, this place has now been restored. Thanks to federal stimulus funding and the work of the East Valley Historical Society, the North Shore Yacht Club has been renovated to its original appearance. The revamped club will serve as a senior center, community center, and museum - the latter under the direction of North Shore preservationist Jennie Kelly, who has already helped bring the long-extinct boat races back to the sea. The new museum is where the tale of Albert Frey's shimmering yacht club - with its fantastic ups and downs - will finally be told. The North Shore Yacht Club is an historically significant--not to mention architecturally significant--part of California's legacy. The North Shore Yacht club was the whimsical design of noted architect Albert Frey, who just happened to be a resident of the Coachella Valley. Completed in 1958 by developers Ray Ryan and Trav Rogers, North Shore Beach Yacht Club was one of the largest marinas in Southern California and carried a price tag of $2 million. Celebrities like The Beach Boys, Jerry Lewis, and the Marx Brothers partied there and or docked boats at the marina. - The Salton Sea Chronicles A promotional video for the Yacht Club in its heyday - check out how nice this place once was: www.youtube.com This location is featured in the music video Swing Out Sister - Fooled By A Smile: www ...

Decaying Ruins at Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea - April 30, 2011

The Salton Sea was originally expected to become the next Palm Springs -- but with a large lake to provide numerous water recreation activities: boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, sailing, and more. Around the Sea, yacht clubs, marinas, and hotels were built. Master planned communities were slated. Water, sewer, and power lines were laid. Streets were paved and street signs installed. People bought empty lots -- in hopes of the land rapidly increasing in value. After all, how could waterfront property NOT be a great investment? Things were looking great for the Salton Sea... ...until the salinity of the water began rising to unnatural levels. The unnatural salt level of the water began killing the fish -- hundreds of thousands of dead fish began washing ashore. In addition to the stench of the dead fish, algae blooms would choke the water, die off, and make the stench even worse. In 1976, Hurricane Kathleen caused flooding and other damage to the area. Since then, many buildings around the Sea have been abandoned and continue to decay. Nowadays, the Sea is like a swimming pool without any functioning circulation pumps or filters. There is no fresh water flowing into the sea -- so the water remains stagnant. Several ideas for saving the Salton Sea have been devised, but nobody has been able to secure sufficient funding to implement any restoration plans. Despite all the decay seen here, there are still many residents that remain in the town of Bombay Beach. The ...

Salton Sea, The French Riviera of California

WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY. CLICK BY VIEW COUNT. In one of the lowest, driest places in North America sits the Salton Sea, which is really a man-made lake, in a desert basin. It is Californias largest body of water, approximately 35 miles north of the Mexican border and 130 miles east of San Diego, in what was once the northern extension of the Gulf of California (see diagram). The Salton Seas surface is approximately 227 feet below sea level. It covers 381 square miles and averages 31 feet deep (maximum depth is 51 feet). On three sides it is bordered by mountains. There is no outlet for its Water except for evaporation, which occurs at a high rate because of the hot and dry climate. Although freshwater feeds it, the sea is now 25 percent saltier than the ocean.
