Winner - Russia - February 2008

Barring a major upset, Dmitry Medvedev will succeed Putin as President next week. Over the past eight years, Putin's government has steadily dismantled Russia's democratic structures, destroying any real opposition. During the chaos of the Yeltsin years, Western imposed reforms nearly bankrupt the country. In contrast, Putin's centralist policies have; "moved Russia from anarchy to normal life", explains friend Sergei Markov. There's a genuine belief here that the West wants to keep Russia weak and one of its tools for doing so is demanding democracy. Liberal critics like Gary Kasparov are denounced as Western stooges. "We consider people like Kasparov traitors", states Nashi member Masha Drokova. "We want Russia to be a sovereign democracy and that is only possible if Putin's policies are continued". There's little chance of that not happening. The Kremlin-controlled state media is banned from even mentioning the names of opposition candidates. Even when Putin stands down as President, he's expected to remain the real power in the Kremlin. Delegated successor, Dmitry Medvedev, has no independent power base of his own and Putin will be his Prime Minister. It seems that the only vote that really matters in the elections has already been cast. ABC Australia

Russian Troops To Target Terrorist in America

Russian airborne troops are set to train how to target terrorists in America as part of a joint anti-terror drill with the United States which will take place in Fort Carson, Colorado at the end of next month. "Airborne troops from Russia and the United States would hold joint anti-terror drills in the US state of Colorado between May 24 and 31," reports the Xinhua news agency, citing Russian Defense Ministry Col. Alexander Kucherenko. The story was also reported by Russian news outlet RIA Novosti. The exercises, which will mark the first time the respective country's two airborne forces have held joint drills on US territory, will revolve around the the "reconnaissance of imaginary terrorists' camp and a raid," and will also involve evacuations of the troops by helicopter. The Russian soldiers will also be given access to US special service weapons at Fort Carson. However, the Russian troops won't just be confined to a US military base -- on May 27 they'll be out in the local community attending a baseball game in Colorado Springs. We Object! Russia and China veto UN resolution on Syria

The United Nations Security Council has just voted on a draft resolution concerning the ongoing violence in Syria. Of the voting members, Russia and China were the only ones to vote against the draft, but as permanent members of the UNSC they both hold veto power, and the resolution has not been passed as a result. The news follows days of heated political debates in the UNSC, with many members supporting a Western-backed draft calling for foreign nations to put an end to what some called the "Syrian killing machine." Russia and China were the only permanent Security Council members opposing the draft, reminding others that it was not their place to intervene in another country's domestic affairs. Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin earlier said any proposals including an arms embargo or a demand for Assad's resignation would be vetoed.
