En 1994 à Nantes le contrebassiste Simon Mary fonde le groupe "Mukta" (perles en sanskrit ). Sous l'influence de John McLaughlin, ce jazzman veut mêler sa culture d'origine à la musique indienne. Il s'entoure du trompettiste Geoffroy Tamisier, du batteur Jean Chevalier et du joueur de tablas Bob Coke qui bientôt quittera le groupe pour rejoindre Ben Harper. Peu de temps après la sitariste Brigitte Menon est intégrée à la formation. Après un premier album en 1998, ils sont nominés aux Victoires du jazz. Le percussionniste Olivier Congar les a rejoint en leur apportant une touche afro-cubaine. Le groupe rencontre le succès lors de nombreux concerts qu'ils donnent en Europe. L'album suivant est double : l'un des disques est entièrement acoustique, l'autre flirte avec l'électronique. En 2003, Michel Guay remplace la sitariste et Mukta s'adjoint les services du flûtiste Pascal Vandenbulcke. C'est avec cette formation qu'est composé leur nouvel album "Haveli", partiellement enregistré en Inde avec l'apport de musiciens traditionnels.

Suli an innocent, happy carefree girl tethering on the brink of womanhood is unexpectedly forced into a life of servitude to the local deity when the uneducated, rural community in which she resides compels her to live a life of subjugation and serfdom on account of rampant superstitions that plagues the village. As Suli struggles to adjust to the new life unexpectedly thrust upon her, a far cry from the dreams and aspirations she once harbored, she meets Tayappa, a man forced to drape a sari and live the life of a woman and a homosexual as he too is a victim of the same circumstances that afflict her life. Brought together by the plight of their similar circumstances and wretched futures, Suli and Tayappa develop a warm and cherishing camaraderie, which eventually blossoms into love. The two gentle, wounded souls seek solace and comfort in each others company. Together they once again dream of living a happy, normal life, but are forced to face the wrath of a highly disapproving community that is hell-bent upon destroying their union. A heart wrenching tale that exposes the hypocrisies and exploitations of an oppressed society harrowed by archaic traditions and plagued by superstitions in the heart of rural India, Jogwa is a poignant tale of one woman's inspiring journey to break free from the shackles of discrimination, sexual oppression and servitude and find true happiness.

Synopsis : Taal - The Beat Of Passion is the story of a young girl Mansi - Aishwarya Rai who lives in a small village Chamba, Himachal Pradesh with her family who are folk singers. A young and brilliant son - Akshaye Khanna of on NRI businessmen - Amrish Puri, who comes to visit this place finds him self totally bewitched by the beauty of Mansi and falls in love with her and returns to Bombay after promising to marry her. The father and the daughter later go to Bombay to meet the boy and discuss about the marriage, but they are humiliated by his family members. They come across an owner of a music and entertainment company (Anil Kapoor) who has a strong affinity for the folk singers sngs and is enthralled by the beauty of the singers daughter.
