This is a video I put together relatively quickly in response to YouTube user zackaks videos something on the moon and something on the moon (longer version). The videos show what appears to be a large cube shaped structure near the rim of a large crater. This is merely an illusion the object is simply the shadowed rim of the crater Clavius. For both of the videos descriptions, zackak has stated that the object is indeed just the shadowed rim of Clavius and that there is no actual, physical cube shaped object. However, many of the users commenting on the videos insist that it must be a physical object. This video shows that theyre simply wrong, and proves that the object is nothing more than a neat illusion. A quick summary of the video: 1. The object is absent in other images of the crater and under different illumination, the features of the rim that create the illusion are easily visible. 2. The direction of the shadow cast by the hypothetical object is inconsistent with the direction of the Sun. The shadow the object appears to be casting is at a large angle to the direction it should be going in. Rather, the shadowing is entirely consistent with that of the surrounding crater rims. 3.Crater Clavius, and hence, this object, is easily visible in even relatively basic telescopes. If such an object existed, every amateur astronomer in the world would be able to see and image it. And because this month's full moon coincides with the moon's perigee — its closest approach to Earth — it will also be the year's biggest. The moon will swing in 221802 miles (356955 kilometers) from our planet, offering skywatchers a spectacular view of an extra-big, extra-bright moon, nicknamed a supermoon. And not only does the moon's perigee coincide with full moon this month, but this perigee will be the nearest to Earth of any this year, as the distance of the moon's close approach varies by about 3 percent, according to meteorologist Joe Rao, SPACE.com's skywatching columnist. This happens because the moon's orbit is not perfectly circular. This month's full moon is due to be about 16 percent brighter than average. In contrast, later this year on Nov. 28, the full moon will coincide with apogee, the moon's farthest approach, offering a particularly small and dim full moon. www.nasa.gov - Super Moon Saturday May 5th 2012 - What to Expect. www.jsc.nasa.gov May 1, 2012 - The largest full moon of 2012 called the 'Supermoon' or perigee full moon, will take place on Saturday, Might 5, 2012, all around eleven:35 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on the eastern coast of the United States and on Sunday, Could 6, at 1:35 pm in Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. - SUPER MOON. Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit. A perigee full Moon brings with it extra-high 'perigean tides,' but this is nothing to worry about, according to America's NOAA space-weather predicting agency. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters (an inch or so) higher than usual. 'To view this weekend's supermoon to best effect, look for it just after it rises or before it sets, when it is close to the horizon. Skywatchers take note: The biggest full moon of the year is due to arrive this weekend. The moon will officially become full Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 pm EDT. And because this month's full moon coincides with the moon's perigee — its closest approach to Earth — it will also be the year's biggest. The moon will swing in 221802 miles (356955 kilometers) from our planet, offering skywatchers a spectacular view of an extra-big, extra-bright moon, nicknamed a supermoon. And not only does the moon's perigee coincide with full moon this month, but this perigee will be the nearest to Earth of any this year, as the distance of the moon's close approach varies by about 3 percent, according to meteorologist Joe Rao, SPACE.com's skywatching columnist. This happens because the moon's orbit is not perfectly circular. This month's full moon is due to be about 16 percent brighter than average. In contrast, later this year on Nov. 28, the full moon will coincide with apogee, the moon's farthest approach, offering a particularly small and dim full moon. Though the unusual appearance of this month's full moon may be surprising to some, there's no reason for alarm, scientists warn. The slight distance difference isn't enough to cause any earthquakes or extreme tidal effects, experts say. However, the normal tides around the world will be particularly high and low.
