Born Michael Gerard Tyson on June 30, 1966 in Brooklyn, NY. A standout amateur, Tyson was the 1984 National Golden Gloves champion. Following a controversial loss to Henry Tillman at the 1984 Olympic trials, he turned pro in 1985. Behind his trademark peek-a-boo defense, quick hand speed and swarming combination punching, Tyson strung together 19 straight knockout victories before going the 10-round distance in back-to-back fights with James "Quick" Tillis and Mitch Green. Six more knockouts followed before stopping WBC king Trevor Berbick (TKO 2) in 1986 to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history. He added the WBA title with a decision over James Smith (W 12) and unified the titles with a win over IBF champion Tony Tucker (W 12), both in 1987. Six defenses of the unified titles came next, including wins over Larry Holmes, Tony Tubbs, Frank Bruno and Carl Williams. He stopped Michael Spinks in 91 seconds to earn universal recognition as champion in 1988. In 1990 he lost the title in an upset loss to James "Buster" Douglas. He rebounded for four wins, including two against Razor Ruddock. A proposed 1991 title bout with Evander Holyfield was postponed due to a rib injury. Golota, although behind on the scorecards is very much in the fight but retires on his stool saying "I quit" to the cornerman who acts in disbelief. Later it is revealed that Golota has a broken bone in his head, which could have pierced his brain, should the fight have continued. Golota claimed in the dressing room that Tyson was headbutting him all the time during the fight, but the referee did not warn Tyson. After the bout, Tyson tested positive for marijuana, which led the commission to change the result from a technical knockout to a no contest.

Tyson was the undisputed heavyweight champion and holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles. He won the WBC title when he was 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old, after defeating Trevor Berbick by a TKO in the second round. Throughout his career, Tyson became well-known for his ferocious and intimidating boxing style as well as his controversial behavior both inside and outside the ring. He was the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles simultaneously. Tyson is considered to have been one of the better heavyweight boxers of all time. He is also the only Heavyweight boxer to individually unify the WBC, WBA and IBF titles. Nicknamed "Iron Mike" and "The Baddest Man on the Planet", Tyson won his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, with twelve of them occurring in the first round. He unified the belts in the splintered heavyweight division in the late 1980s to become undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Tyson became the lineal champion when he knocked out Michael Spinks in the first 91 seconds of the fight. Tyson lost his titles to 42-to-1 underdog James "Buster" Douglas on February 11, 1990, in Tokyo, Japan, by a knockout in round 10.
