An estimated 300000 people turned out to welcome the pontiff, who is on a four-day trip, before heading to Cuba. The Pope told supporters: "I know this country is proud of its hospitality and nobody feels like a stranger in your land. I knew that, now I see it and now I feel it in my heart." Pope Benedict's visit is aimed at strengthening support for the Roman Catholic church, which has been falling in recent decades as Mexicans turn to more evangelic and protestant faiths. The pontiff will skip a trip to the capital Mexico City due to its high altitude, which the Vatican says is not good for his health. The main event of the Pope's visit will be Sunday's open-air Mass in Leon's Bicentennial Park. More than 300000 tickets have been distributed. Thousands more are expected to gather on the sides of the nearby mountain. Gay and lesbian groups took to the streets to denounce the Catholic church's human rights record. Young people in Mexico are facing an unemployment rate that is nearly twice the national average. More than 7 million young Mexicans between the age of 15 and 29 are jobless, "the majority of those of us who graduated from university don't have anywhere to get a full time job", said Paola Alcazar, a young woman struggling to find a job in Mexico. Al Jazeera has been following a Mexican family that moved to Veracruz state in the hope of escaping drug-related crimes. Their story forms part of a series on how ordinary families have been affected by some of the most harrowing events this year. Meanwhile, in what is being seen as a major victory for Felipe Calderon, the Mexican president, the Mexican army says it has captured the head of security for one of the world's most wanted men. The suspect, who has not been identified, allegedly works for Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the boss of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel who escaped from prison in 2001. An army spokesman said the suspect would appear in front of the media on Monday. Al Jazeera's Rachel Levin reports from Veracruz.

According to the Fix, teens are using instructions from the web to distill the sanitizer with salt and cheesecloths. While a shot of vodka is usually 80-proof, this booze ooze can be as high as 120-proof. Police in Albuquerque outline the side effects on KRQE. "Diarrhea to blindness, vision problems, memory problems, and then of course, to internal organs. Some of these effects are irreversible effects." But according to Maclean's, this is nothing new to Canada. Back in 2009, teachers discovered kids as young as eight downing the hand sanitizer, saying they'd been enticed by the promise of alcohol "right on the bottle." Struggling to wrap your head around this poison-of-choice? According to KNSD, you'd be surprised at what drinks teenagers have knocked back in the past. "Teenagers have gotten drunk off mouthwash, cough syrup, even vanilla extract." But a writer for Jezebel says the sanitizer sensation is only a trend because the media makes it seem like one.
