Composed of thin, English-born Stan Laurel (1890--1965) and heavy, American-born Oliver Hardy (1892--1957) they became well known during the late 1920s to the mid-1940s for their work in motion pictures; the team also appeared on stage throughout America and Europe. The two comedians first worked together on the film The Lucky Dog. After a period appearing separately in several short films for the Hal Roach studio during the 1920s, they began appearing in movie shorts together in 1926. Laurel and Hardy officially became a team the following year, and soon became Hal Roach's most lucrative stars. Among their most popular and successful films were the features Sons of the Desert (1933), Way Out West (1937), and Block-Heads (1938) and the shorts Big Business (1929), Liberty (1929), and their Academy Award-winning short, The Music Box (1932). The pair left the Roach studio in 1940, then appeared in eight "B" comedies for 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1941 to 1945. Disappointed in the films in which they had little creative control, from 1946 to 1950 the team did not appear on film and concentrated on their stage show, embarking on a musical hall tour of England, Ireland and Scotland. Where to even start when describing The Laurel Collective...? Collective by name and by composition also, the six piece (whittled down from nineteen a year ago) comprise members hailing from Wales, England, Nigeria and Italy. The Laurels are a genre trashing six piece led by the twin attack and contrasting vocals of front men Martin Sakutu and Bob Tollast. Imagine the motley crew spirit of such misfit gangs as The Specials and Dexys mixed with the rhythmical assault and groove of Sly Family Stone, and blended with the psychedelic pop sensibilities of Super Furry Animals and you'd be half way there. It is a partial remake of their 1931 short film Beau Hunks. The boys are in Paris. Ollie proposes to the innkeeper's daughter Georgette, who is actually married to a soldier, François. When she turns him down, Ollie decides to jump into the River Seine. He drags Stan along with him, and they discuss reincarnation: Stan: Well now that you're going to go, what would you like to come back as? Ollie: Well I haven't given it much thought. I like horses. I guess I'd like to come back as a horse. Stan: Hah! Ollie: What would you like to be when you come back? Stan: Oh, I'd rather come back as myself. I always got on swell with me. The boys are saved from suicide in the nick of time when François changes their mind and recruits them into the French Foreign Legion. They are sent to a fort in North Africa, where they disrupt drills, and are eventually sent to do laundry work.
