Homesteading and Pioneer skills Part 1, survival, homestead, survivalist, peak oil, back to the land, end of oil

Part One of a new series showcasing some Homesteading and Pioneer living skills. We recently attended a public festival demonstrating some of these "old school" skills. In this video we toured the festival and talked with some of the folks demonstrating these skills. With some of these people we had to kind of "lead" them into talking about the skills via asking obvious questions, etc. Some were really helpful and interested in talking about the skills, a few were downright rude. As your watching this, consider the amount of TIME involved with certain tasks- like putting up a year supply of firewood. In this first video we show them using a crosscut saw and a Bucksaw. It would take you probably weeks to put up a year supply of firewood with these methods. Now it's important to know these skills and even have of these old school tools and implements, but don't throw away your chainsaws! Matter of fact, you should take a hard look at your chainsaws and resulting logistics train (spare parts, extra bar, extra chains, files, preserved fuel, fuel mix, bar/chain oil, etc.) after watching this once you realize that you could put up as much wood in probably a DAY that it would take a WEEK or more to put up with hand tools! I'm all for learning these skills and we practice a lot of these skills regularly, but I also think it's important to stockpile a pile of cheap soap (Ivory 16 bars $3.). Make soap by yourself from scratch- not from a kit- one time and you'll want to go out and ...

HOMESTEADING - Rabbit Nest Boxes

showing the couple of different nest box styles I use for my rabbits - also known as BOO RATS. I should have mentioned for actually nesting boxes for kits, you need some sort of floor. 1, you need to check on the babies periodically to make sure all is well, and to remove any ones that didn't make it. Often its easiest to lift the nest box out of the cage. 2, unless you anchor your nest box into the hutch, rabbits are notorious for moving things around in their cage - without a floor a baby could get caught under the box if the mom starts moving it around. wire floors are best as they are more hygienic than wood floors (which can get moldy quick, trap the poo etc...). For a winter box, to stay warm, no floor is the cleanest, easiest option. The hay they pack inside becomes the perfect temporary floor.

Idaho Homesteading - Whiskey Springs

This historic cabin includes a single home, out buildings and stable and is located along what was once the Mackay to Challis wagon Road. Whiskey Springs served as a stage stop around 1910 and in 1918, the development of the town of Chilly caused the decline of stage traffic. It was later used as a gas station and a rest stop in the 1930s and was an infamous point of distribution during the prohibition days of the 1920s.

What Urban Homesteading Looks Like (part 1)

You don't have to retreat to a cabin in the forest to grow your own tomatoes and raise chickens, you can do it anywhere. People are growing cucumbers on windowsills in a Los Angeles and harvesting honey on the rooftops of New York City. A new way of participating in the food/life cycle is blushing on the horizon. We are living in the dawn of the ecotarian. People want to get back (don't make me say it) to their roots (gotcha!). A relatively new movement, urban homesteading takes "simple living" to the next level (sorry Martha) through incorporating small-scale agriculture, sustainable and permaculture gardening, and home food production and storage into every day life. By growing their own food and harnessing natural energy, city dwellers are reconnecting with their land while planting seeds for the future for our cities. Over the past 4 years Michelle has transformed her tiny cement jungle of a patio into an urban homestead complete with compost piles, laundry lines, and edible produce. Pretty impressive for a girl who couldn't keep a spider plant alive a mere four years ago.

Homesteading (21) Wild mushroom picking

Some insights into the delights of picking your own wild mushrooms! Some guidelines include: * Dress appropriately. Here in Poland one can get deer ticks which can be lethal if not discovered in time. * Adders can sometimes be found in the forest, particularly on hot days near rocks. * Check your mushrooms very carefully. If spongey (pory), they are generally edible (but not always so check your mushroom guide!). Any that have gills (blaszki) are normally inedible. * Best to start picking very early in the day. The season in Poland really starts end of September/October. * Take a sharp knife. Some people also like to use a stick for checking for mushrooms hidden under foliage. * Mushrooms can be eaten fresh or dried for the winter. Good mushroom guides: * Atlas grzybow by Marek Snowarski (Publisher: Elipsa Sp. z oo) * Grzyby lesne by Andrzej Grzywacz (Pub. Panstwowe Wydawnictwo Rolnicze i Lesne, Warszawa 1990)

I'm not sure if the end of the world will happen...but just in case, here is how you can live off the land! -Buy 6 months to 1 year worth of stored/packaged food. (meals or bulk items such as rice, grains, sugar, flour, etc.) Hit up Costco or Sam's club, etc. Or order the bucket foods from Cabelas or other outfitters. -Cast Iron water/well pump -Wood Stove/Fireplace -Stock up on propane and propane stove/burners (eventually switch to wood stoves) -Cast Iron cookware for the wood stove (use the ashes for soap, dusting chickens, etc.) -Grow a large garden and preserve the food (canning, pickling, smoking) -Solar generator -Chickens/Goats -Security (reusable weapons and some guns) -Community (more likely to survive with a community) -Grow the feed/grains for animals (1 acre of corn will feed a cow, and 2-3 other large animals for a year) -Plant or have indoors, fruit/nut trees -Grow lots of plants indoors if you live in a cold climate, to eat throughout the year

Homesteading Preppers Library Series Part 3: Livestock video #1

In this of two videos, introductions are made of just what kinds of livestock the homesteading prepper may want to consider depending on lot or acreage size and so forth. I may have come off a bit admonishing about preparing for livestock before bringing any home, but that's only because I've witnessed over and over animals suffering in an ill-equipped new home with ill-equipped new owners, so it's gotten to be a pet peeve of mine. As with all our endeavors getting ready for what the future might bring, preparation and organization is everything when it comes to success with livestock too.
