I filmed this huge 6 foot halibut while diving in the La Jolla Cove, at a depth of 120 feet. A halibut is a type of flatfish from the family of the righteye flounders (Pleuronectidae). This name is derived from Dutch heilbot. Halibut live in both the North Pacific and the North Atlantic oceans and are highly regarded food fish. The Halibut is the largest of all flat fish, with an average weight of about 25 lb - 30 lb, but they can grow to be as much as 600 lbs. The Halibut is blackish-grey on the top side and off-white on the underbelly side. When the Halibut is born the eyes are on both sides of its head so it has to swim like a salmon. After about 6 months one eye will migrate to the other side of its head, making it look more like the flounder. This happens at the same time that the stationary eyed side begins to develop a blackish-grey pigment while the other side remains white. This disguises a halibut from above (blending with the ocean floor) and from below (blending into the light from the sky). Commercial halibut fishery in the North Pacific dates to the late 19th century and today is one of the largest and most lucrative fisheries in the region. In Canadian and US waters of the North Pacific, halibut are taken by longline, using chunks of octopus ("devilfish") or other bait on circle hooks attached at regular intervals to a weighted line that can extend for several miles across the bottom. Earlier this year Danish TV host Mads Hussing was fishing with sports fishing journalists and experts Jakob Lindberg and Peter Kirkby from kineticfishing.com. They were fishing and shooting footage for a series of fishing shows -- "Fiskemagasinet" or in English "The Fishing Magazine" -- to be shown on the Danish TV channel DK4 later this year. The fishing took place at two different locations -- the Nordic Sea Angling camp at Ringvassøya near Tromsø and Artic Lyngen Sjøcamp at Lyngsfjorden a three hours' drive east of Tromsø. During six days of fishing, thirteen halibuts were caught. The two biggest were caught during the last day of fishing in Lyngsfjord. They measured 134 cm and 150 cm in length and the weight of these fishes was estimated to respectively 35-40 kilos and 50 kilos or more. The biggest one was caught by the TV host. Local family team, Erin & Bradley , show a fishing technique for halibut fishing with a 'skate'. Hooks are baited and sent down to the bottom with anchors, in hopes to catch some fish. This technique is being used for personal use and consumption of the fish, through the use of a Subsistence Halibut Registration Certificate (SHARC). www.fakr.noaa.gov When commercial fisherman use this technique, the defintion goes something like this: Halibut are caught using the "long-line" method. This fishing gear consists of units of leaded ground lines in lengths of 100 fathoms which are referred to as "skates". Each skate has approximately 100 hooks spread out along its length. A "set" consist of one or more baited skates tied together and laid on the ocean bottom with anchors at each end. Each end has a float line with a buoy reaching the surface. Hooks are baited with frozen herring or other fresh fish. A skate set could cover several miles of ocean floor. Depending on the fishing grounds, time of year, and bait used, a set is fished 2 to 20 hours before being pulled by a hydraulic puller.

This extremely strong 33 kilo halibut was caught during spring 2010, when fishing from Nordic Sea Anglings camp in Sørøya, Northern Norway. It was caught in mid water on a 450 g Magic Minnow Giant Jighead. During the fight it went all the way from the surface and 60 meters down to the bottom twice!
