Listening to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's speech to the US Congress the other day, I wrote this musical response. For a long time now, every time I hear an Israeli patriot or apologist complaining that such-and-such a group or government won't recognize Israel as a Jewish state, I always wonder -- even if there is a good reason the Christians, Muslims and atheists of Palestine should live under some form of Jewish rule, how does one go about recognizing the legitimacy of a state that itself won't disclose exactly what its borders are? How does that work? Nobody seems to know. Ask the next Israeli you meet and see what they say. Where are your country's borders? Israeli Geography 101 Netanyahu is in a tizzy, his eyes are filled with hate He said the problem with those Arabs is they won't recognize a Jewish state He said those Palestinians just won't come around To accepting Jewish rule on their holy ground He said the Arabs don't accept their new neighbors in the 'hood Those ungrateful regimes don't respect us as they should Well I don't want to upset anyone or to unduly take to task But if a state wants recognition it seems reasonable to ask Where are your borders drawn in black and white? Do they include the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights? I heard him speaking to the Congress, getting his 29th standing o He said we need our security from those terrorists, don't you know If you want security, I wonder if you'd say it's true That the Palestinians should have ...

According to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are nearly 30 million people currently unemployed -- that's including those involuntarily working part time and those who want a job, but have given up on trying to find one. In the face of the worst economic upheaval since the Great Depression, millions of Americans are hurting. "The Decline: The Geography of a Recession," as created by labor writer LaToya Egwuekwe, serves as a vivid representation of just how much. Watch the deteriorating transformation of the US economy from January 2007 -- approximately one year before the start of the recession -- to the most recent unemployment data available today. This is a new segment entitled "Wyss' Pieces" featured on my campus television show "Concordia Spotlight." In this episode, I wanted to test the geography knowledge of the students at Concordia University in St. Paul. I took a camera around with me and just asked some basic geography questions. This is somewhere in between "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader" and Jay Leno's "Jaywalking." The results were stunning to say the least. This is now being broadcast on Concordia University's on-campus channel, CTP. Enjoy! © Andy Wyss Sample Questions: What is the world's tallest mountain? Historian Ian Morris examines how the transatlantic trade economy and the geography of those trade routes led to mathematical breakthroughs in the 17th century. Morris argues that the advancement of mathematics caused a chain reaction of innovative thought that culminated in industrial and scientific revolutions across the British Empire. ------ A Malaysian lawyer told a British journalist: "I am wearing your clothes, I speak your language, I watch your films, and today is whatever date it is because you say so." Do chaps or maps drive history? Human brilliance and folly, or geography? Or maybe genes, or culture? Ian Morris goes a level deeper than Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel to determine why the standards of Europe and North America now prevail in the world when it was the East that dominated for the 1200 years between 550 and 1750 CE. Why did that happen, and what will happen next? Ian Morris is an archaeologist and professor of classics and history at Stanford. His splendid book is Why the West Rules -- For Now: The Patterns of History, and What They Reveal About the Future. - The Long Now Foundation

Very Interesting documentary. Could the fabled lost city of Atlantis have been located? Using satellite photography, ground-penetrating radar and underwater technology, experts are now surveying marshlands in Spain to look for proof of the ancient city. If the team can match geological formations to Plato's descriptions and date artifacts back to the time of Atlantis, we may be closer to solving one of the world's greatest mysteries.
