In the study of baseball, it has become increasingly apparent the Earned Run Average (ERA) statistic does not effectively evaluate pitchers. As a result, many now turn to the FIP -- or Fielding Independent Pitching -- statistic, which neutralizes the good or bad fielding that can affect a pitcher's ERA. If you have any questions or concerns about these metrics, head over to Fangraphs.com or contact the video's creator at DRaysBay.com.

The key event in the development of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is the infection of the monocyte (a white blood cell) by feline coronavirus (FCoV). From the moment of infection of the monocyte, the cat's fate hangs on whether or not that monocyte can contain the virus and eventually defeat it, or whether the virus wins, and begins replicating within the monocyte. In this animation, we depict the latter. We show how the virus hijacks the immune system, leading to an inflammatory sequence of events which results in a pyogranuloma forming around a blood vessel. In the film we show the development of acute FIP, where there is a lot of virus, many blood vessels affected, and the resulting leakage from damaged blood vessels causes the clinical signs of effusive FIP -- ascites, thoracic effusion, pericardial effusion. In non-effusive FIP the course is more chronic: fewer blood vessels are affected, the cat's immune system tries harder to contain the infection, leading to larger pyogranulomata and the clinical signs of chronic inflammation and relating to the organ(s) containing the pyogranulomas. The catvirus.com website and You Tube channel are mainly aimed at postgraduate veterinarians and undergraduate veterinary students, to supply information which is difficult to source elsewhere and to enable free online continuing professional development. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a leading infectious cause of death in the cat, especially affecting purebred cats and cats in rescue environments anywhere a lot of cats are kept indoors. No matter what any laboratory or manufacturer of test kits claims, there is no single test for FIP diagnosis is a challenge to even the most competent veterinary clinician and involves following a series of steps on an algorithm (free to download from www.catvirus.com). FIP can present as effusive (wet) or non-effusive (dry). This film shows one step in the work up of an effusion in a suspect wet FIP case. To perform a Rivalta test, take 10 mls of water (must be at room temperature), add 2-3 drops of 8% acetic acid (ordinary clear/white vinegar) and carefully layer a drop of the effusion into it. If the effusion dissipates like a wisp of smoke in air the Rivalta test is negative and the cat is 97% not likely to have FIP. If, however, the effusion hangs from the surface in a globule, then slowly floats down like a jellyfish, the Rivalta test is positive. A positive Rivalta test means that the cat is 86% likely to have FIP (ie 5 of 6 cats with a positive Rivalta test do have FIP, so clearly other tests need to be performed to be more certain of the diagnosis). Dr Diane D. Addie is a veterinary virologist with two dreams: to eradicate feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) from the face of the earth, and to find a cure for feline chronic gingivostomatitis. Casper the persian cat was eating ok, but had fluid in the belly. Xrays and surgery revealed the problem to be a tumor in the intestine and feline infectious periotonitis or FIP. Surgery revealed fluid in the belly, and a tumor in the intestines. FIP is a virus that infects young cats or cats with poor immunity, especially in dense cat populations like catteries or feral cat colonies.

Pancho was a 5 year old domestic shorthair cat who was referred to Dr Diane D. Addie as a cat already being treated for FIP. His referring veterinary surgeon wanted to know if there was a better treatment than just prednisolone that he could be given to extend his life. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is one of the main infectious causes of death in the cat, especially affecting purebred cats and cats in rescue environments -- anywhere a lot of cats are kept indoors. No matter what any laboratory or manufacturer of test kits claims, there is no single test for FIP -- diagnosis is a challenge to even the most competent veterinary clinician and involves following a series of steps on an algorithm (free to download from www.catvirus.com). FIP can present as effusive (wet) or non-effusive (dry). This film is a case report of a suspect non-effusive case, taking the viewer step by step through the FIP diagnostic algorithm. The free FIP diagnostic algorithm and worksheet can be downloaded at: www.dr-addie.com/downloads.html I apologise for the poor sound on this video -- I'm afraid I haven't quite mastered that technical aspect yet. I am very grateful to Pancho himself, and to his guardian Danièlle Merian, for allowing their story to help others. I am grateful to French veterinary osteopath, Véronique Zenoni (www.verozeno.vetosteo.eu), for involving me in this case. www.zshare.net Garry Marshall Shider (July 24, 1953 -- June 16, 2010) was an American musician and guitarist. He was musical director of the P-Funk All-Stars for much of their history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. Shider was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. At the age of ten and under the guidance of his father Jesse, Garry and his brothers played and sang behind many gospel artists of the time including legends such as Shirley Caesar, The Five Blind Boys, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and others. As a youth Shider was also a regular customer at the Plainfield barbershop owned by George Clinton, where the future members Parliament would sing doo-wop for customers and counsel local youngsters. Clinton made note of the young Shider's talents on guitar and his ability with gospel singing. By the time he was sixteen, Shider wished to escape the crime and dead-end prospects of Plainfield, so he and his friend Cordell "Boogie" Mosson left for Canada where they formed a funk/rock band called United Soul, or "US". George Clinton was living in Toronto, Ontario at the time and began hearing about United Soul from people in the local music business, and took the band under his wing upon learning that Shider was a member. In 1971, Clinton produced several tracks by United Soul with input from members of Funkadelic. The songs "I Miss My Baby" and "Baby I Owe You Something Good" were released as a one-off <b>...</b>

This video contains pictures and a video, from Kitten's last several weeks here with us before she passed on. (Clarification: All except the last four pictures which were taken within the first couple of hours of my rescuing Kitten from under a shed in Sept 2009!) Kitten was taken by FIP. She was just over seven months old. FIP or Feline Infectious Peritionitis is a fatal disease. It stole her life just over four weeks... Letting her go, was one of the hardest things I have ever done. She was beautiful, brave and sweet spirited. I have never had a cat like her in the just over 40 years I have walked this earth. There will always be a void in my heart, until my prayer is answered. I pray Father has gathered her unto Himself, until the day I see Him and Kitten and I will reunited again forever. My heart goes out to all the others who have lost a pet to this horrible disease before me and to those, who I fear will come after me. My thoughts and prayers are towards you all. The Soundtrack is "Somewhere Out There" by Linda Rondstat/James Ingram. I do not own the music. I thank them for the beautiful words and melody which express the feelings of my heart.

Check out and share the widget nlnm.harmonia-mundi.info Lila Downs is now releasing her first live recording, Lila Downs y La Misteriosa en Paris, recorded in May, 2009, at Radio France Studio 105, on world village, a label of harmonia mundi. Downs is well-known for her texturally rich and diverse recordings, as well as dynamic live performances. The album delivers the best of both worlds, brilliantly capturing the exuberant energy of Lila and eight international musicians performing together, weaving traditional instruments including accordion, harp, clarinet and trombone with driving bass and drums, electric guitar, and infectious Latin percussion. The songs on Lila Downs y La Misteriosa: En Paris span six albums, from 1999's La Sandunga to 2008's Shake Away, and clearly demonstrate the timelessness of her music. Sometimes the sound feels like a heat fueled road trip from Oaxaca to New Orleans. But then Downs is not afraid to shake things up with a cumbia rock, beat-poet style rap, or even the chirps of an iguana, taking the music to its own enigmatic world. From the carnival like atmosphere of Perro Negro or the blues of Minimum Wage, to traditional Mexican songs that audiences have come to love such as Paloma Negra, few artists can successfully navigate the terrain of such seemingly disparate music. But Lila Downs y La Misteriosa go to the core of it, make it their own, and bring the audience along for an emotional and memorable ride.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV), which causes feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), is shed in the faeces. FCoV infection occurs when cats ingest (or inhale) the virus. FCoV is a very contagious virus and it only takes a tiny speck of cat litter dust from a litter tray previously used by an infected cat for the virus to spread. FCoV is a moderately stable virus, lasting up to 7 weeks in the environment (so it is not as stable as parvovirus, which can survive for a year, but is a lot more stable than feline herpesvirus which survives only about 12 hours). FCoV is protected by cat faeces, by cat litter (unless the litter has anti-virus properties) and the by the stable environment inside a house or shelter. Outdoors, cat faeces is buried by the cat and is rapidly broken down in the soil. Cats do not seek out each others' faeces, as dogs do, so there is a good chance of the FCoV dying long before another cat is exposed to it. Of course, FCoV has evolved to deal with this problem and is incredibly infectious and is shed at a rate of billions of particles per gram (or ounce) of faeces. In this animation we meet Augustus, a healthy FCoV infected cat, and see how when he uses a litter tray, his faeces contains billions of the highly infectious virus. Augustus will shed virus in his faeces for a few weeks or months, then will stop shedding the virus -- it is likely that nobody will ever know that he was infected. Enter Plato, an uninfected cat who has to share a litter tray with <b>...</b>
