Renowned for their uncompromising policies to banish all signs of a Soviet legacy, Estonian officials are pushing harder and harder on the country's, still vast, Russian-speaking community. Tallinn is a mix of east and west. Its Nordic Lutheran culture and language connect it with Scandinavia's Stockholm and Helsinki. But two centuries of Tsarist Russian rule and nearly 50 years as part of the Soviet Union have blended in a distinctly Russian flavor. Tallinn has modernized at an astounding rate since the fall of the Soviet Union, while also remaining one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the north of Europe. A report by Ángel Varela Pena. We are in Tallin, the capital of Estonia and European Cultural Capital for2011. The tiny Baltic country has become a good example of using the Internet for free. Estonia obtained its independence from the Soviet Union 20 years ago. Before 1991, it was difficult to have computers, but in 2011 Estonia has become the country which creates companies such as Skype and Kazaa. What is its secret? The former journalist and politician Marko Mihkelson explains this revolution. In 2007, Estonia became the first country in the world to hold online legislative elections. This is the concept established in Estonia. It began as the "Let´s Do It" project. Let´s have a look at a global project created here: "Let´s Do IT" At the beginning, a friend´s group asked themselves why they were living in the midst of garbage if the people had the solution. A founding engineer of Skype created this application to find garbage. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, a local idea has become a global idea. Estonia has a smaller population than Barcelona, but almost everybody has a laptop and a blog. The creator of Nami Nami blog has been passionate about cooking since she was a child. Estonia obtained its dependence and Pille continued her way. While she was doing (post) graduate studies in Scotland she started writing a blog about Estonian food.It was an instant success. The blog became a book. The illustrator is a Spanish blogger who's crazy about Estonian food. Pille has ...

www.euronews.net It has been a year since Estonia adopted the euro but its fortunes have not mirrored the rest of the eurozone. According to the European Union's forecast, Estonia's economy will grow by a massive 8 percent in 2011 - that is five times faster than the EU as a whole. Unemployment has dropped dramatically but the outlook for next year remains uncertain.

More and more Russians are buying apartments in Estonia - without intending to live there. Owning property in the EU makes it easier for them to obtain a no-borders Schengen visa.Owning real estate in Estonia is no guarantee that they'll get a visa, but it greatly increases their chances. And that makes it easier to take a shopping trip to Paris, for example. Many Estonians are less than enthusiastic about their new, never-seen neighbors. Some of the new owners don't even close the windows in the winter. Others see no reason to pay their bills, leaving neighbors to deal with the consequences.

Thank you! :) --------- I just want to say, that I am deeply disappointed of our Prime Minister. I actually voted for Reform Party, and this is what I get in return. Many and many Estonians have said that they won't elect Reform Party in the next elections. Critics have even said in the media that Mr Ansip should resign. ----- But lets take a look on few points, where Mr Ansip failed and missed. 1) So, Mr Ansip says that the proceeding of ACTA has been completely public. Umm.. has it? Even the European Parliament didn't know that the negotiations took place. 2) Mr Ansip thinks that ACTA will not violate any fundamental rights. Well, the Korff and Brown analysis made it clear that isn't true. www.greens-efa.eu 3) Mr Ansip says that this hasn't reached to the media in Germany. Estonia was a cruise ferry built in 1979 at the German shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The ship sank in the Baltic Sea in one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century. It is the deadliest shipwreck disaster to have occurred in the Baltic Sea in peacetime, costing 852 lives.

RTÉ News Short - Six One News (17/11/11) A stolen tracksuit and a bag of balls helped one ticketless Ireland fan to the best seat in the house for their Euro 2012 playoff win over Estonia - in the opposition dugout. Corkman Conor Cunningham travelled to Tallinn's A. Le Coq Arena and managed to bypass security after sneaking in a stadium side entrance. After sitting next to Estonia manager Tarmo Ruutli for Ireland's 4-0 first victory last Friday, he was spotted by TV cameras on the pitch afterwards celebrating with the Ireland players. "I just spotted an open door and I thought I will stick my head through there but it was just a closed-in room but I found an Estonian tracksuit and I just threw it on," he told the Mirror. "I threw the bag of balls over my shoulder and just went for it. I didn't know what to do, to be honest, so I thought I'd better go into the Estonian dug-out." "No one said anything to me and then I realised I was sitting beside their manager (Tarmo Ruutli). "It was about 10 or 15 minutes into the match when a UEFA official got suspicious of me. He came over and, after talking to me, told me I had to move. "Even after the match I just strolled out on to the pitch." He was unable to travel to Dublin for Tuesday's return leg as Ireland qualified for Euro 2012 with a 5-1 aggregate win. www.rte.ie

The Sinking of the Estonia The Baltic Sea claimed 852 people's lives by drowning and freezing them to death in the 8 degree C cold water. Only 95 bodies were ever recovered. The wreck of the Estonia was not salvaged, but sealed, covered in sand and declared an official burial ground. The 150 metre long Estonia left the Estonian capital Tallin and sailed into a raging Baltic Sea. Unlike the other car ferries on the route, the Estonia ran at full speed into waves more than 15 meters tall. Six hours into the voyage, she sank to a depth of more than 75 metres. The first sign of danger was the sound of metal scraping against metal. The sound was caused by the weakly constructed locks on the bow visor breaking under the strain of the waves. The visor eventually broke off of the ship, uncovering the opening to the car deck behind. Water rushed in and destabilised the ship, starting a catastrophic chain of events that brought the ship down. Without warning, the vessel lurched some 20 degrees to starboard, and would continue to tilt to 90 degrees. Passengers were in danger of getting crushed under falling equipment. At such an angle, it was all but impossible to move around. Those who were going to survive had already reached the deck. Tragically, by then most of the lifeboats could not be released due to sideways tilt of the ship. Soon, the ferry slipped beneath the waves into a watery grave. The Estonia disaster occurred on Wednesday, 28 September 1994, between about 00:55 to 01:50.
