DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Faust (German title: Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage) is a silent film produced in 1926 by UFA, directed by FW Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau's film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe's classic version. UFA wanted Ludwig Berger to direct Faust, as Murnau was engaged with Variety; Murnau pressured the producer and, backed by Jannings, eventually persuaded Erich Pommer to let him direct the movie. Faust was Murnau's last German movie, and directly afterward he moved to the US under contract to William Fox to direct Sunrise (1927); when the film premiered in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo of Berlin, Murnau was already shooting in Hollywood. The demon Mephisto has a bet with an Archangel that he can corrupt a righteous man's soul and destroy in him what is divine. If he succeeds, the Devil will win dominion over earth. The Devil delivers a plague to the village where Faust, an elderly alchemist, lives. Though he prays to stop the death and starvation, nothing happens. Faust then makes a trial, 24-hour bargain with the Devil. Faust will have Mephisto's service till the sand runs out in an hourglass, at which time the Devil will rescind the pact. At first, Faust uses his new power to help the people of the village ...

Joyce Ballantyne was a noteworthy member of the "girl's club" among pin-up artists - her women were often more natural than the studiously coy poses of her male counterparts. she became part of a group of artists who were extremely close, both professionally and personally, including Gil Elvgren, Earl Gross, Al Moore, Coby Whitmore, Thornton Utz, and Al Buell. She was also to become one of the three best known female pin-artists of the period along with Pearl Frush and Zoë Mozert. As one of the top three women pin-up and glamour artists in the calendar art market at mid-century, Pearl Frush readily commanded the respect of the art directors, publishers, sales managers, and printers with whom she worked. Yet because she worked primarily in watercolour and gouache, her originals could rarely be reproduced in large enough quantities for her to achieve widespread popular acclaim. A close examination of her work, however, reveals a talent for meticulously realistic images comparable to those of the far better known Alberto Vargas. Zoë Mozert was the most famous female pin-up artist of her day and is noted for rejecting sexy-girl clichés in favour of depicting "real" young women, with recognizably individual features and personalities. A Chicago artist, Harry Ekman worked side by side with fellow Sundblom shop veteran Gil Elvgren, developing a lush style in oils uncannily like that of his mentor. His girls have the same fresh, wholesome glow as Elvgren's, and are seen in such ...

In this talk, Dr Ekman pointed out that although they both arrived to their conclusions independently, Darwin and Buddhism have similar ideas when it comes to human nature. According to Dr Ekman, both Darwin and Buddhists believe that the highest moral virtue is having compassion for all sentient beings, or rather a concern for all living things.

Choreography by Alexander Ekman. CACTI has been nominated for the Zwaan award for 'Most impressive dance production 2010' by the Dance Panel of the Dutch Theatre and Concert Hall Management Association VSCD. The Swans was presented during the Dutch Dance Gala at the Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht on October 2nd 2010. The VSCD Dance Panel on CACTI (Nederlands Dans Theater 2) by Alexander Ekman: "The young Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman (1984) has created a catching and somewhat cheeky choreography with CACTI. His multitalent shows from the fact that he does not only control the movement, but the music, light and set also come together beautifully. There is a clear dialogue with the classical music. It is a refreshing and imaginative piece that is danced at full speed in lovely large formations. The addition of text gives it all an extra intelligent and humorous edge. CACTI has something peculiar, which is exactly what makes it so popular."

Wegelius (1846-1906) was a key figure in 19th c Finnish music. From 1882 was the first director of the Helsinki Conservatory, where Sibelius was one of his pupils. He founded a Wagner society in Helsinki, and the pianist Karl Ekman (transcriber of this song) collaborated with him in this venture by playing extracts from the scores. This song (full title 'Karin Mansdotters vaggvisa för Erik XIV' - translated as Karin Mansdotter's lullaby Erik XIV) is a setting of a lyric by the 19th c Finnish poet Zacharias Topelius. It recalls Karin Mansdotter (1550-1612), the peasant wife of Erik XIV of Sweden She was very popular in Finlad (ruled by Sweden from 1150-1809), where she retired after Erik's death. More information on her can be found at: en.wikipedia.org The stately setting owes more to Schubert than to Wagner, but one can see stylistic similarities to such later patriotic works as Sibelius's 'Finlandia'. --------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk

This is a gentle reminder from a man of God who loves us too much to leave us the way we are. Will you give 20+mins of your time to be encouraged by the man of God and the Word? He says... "Are you listening? I hope this goes THERE!" (4:40) ... "He (Jesus) speaks, I obey. He (Jesus) goes, I follow. He (Jesus) gives visions, and I believe."
