James Doolittle led a mission of 16 B-25 bombers with 80 volunteers to send Japan a clear message of American air power. They took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet which positioned the aircraft within a reasonable striking distance. On this 65th anniversary, their mission was to drop the first bombs on military targets in Tokyo, Nagoya and Yokohama. All reached their targets successfully, with little Japanese response. Fifteen of the planes crashed or were abandoned in China. A 16th plane landed near Vladivostok, Russia. Two of the aircraft came down in enemy territory and three crewmen were executed. The raid had a psychological effect on the American public which was still reeling from the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. War Department planners hit on the idea of launching Army Air Forces bombers off a Navy carrier, then recovering the aircraft at airfields in China. The call for volunteers went out in March 1942. Commanding General of the Army Air Forces Maj. Gen. "Hap" Arnold gave Doolittle the task of organizing and training the volunteers for the mission. Doolittle was well-known not only as a military pilot, but also for his civilian air racing accomplishments. Short, stocky and nearly bald, he had a reputation for stretching an aircraft to its operational limits, and for doing things his way. He also believed US security depended on a strong Air Force. The Doolittle Raid, 18 April 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese home island of Honshū during World War II. The Doolittle Raid, on 18 April 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese Home Islands (Honshu) during World War II. It demonstrated that Japan itself was vulnerable to American air attack, and it exploited a vital psychological need and opportunity for US retaliation after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. The raid was planned and led by Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle. Sixteen US Army Air Forces B-25B Mitchell medium bombers were launched from the US Navy's aircraft carrier USS Hornet deep in the Western Pacific Ocean. The plan called for them to bomb military targets in Japan, and to continue westward to land in China—landing a medium bomber on the Hornet was impossible. All of the aircraft involved in the bombing were lost and 11 crewmen were either killed or captured—with several of the captured men executed by the Japanese Army in China. One of the B-25s landed in the Soviet Union at Vladivostok, where it was confiscated and its crew interned for more than a year. Thirteen entire crews, and all but one crewman of a 14th, returned either to the United States or to American forces. The raid caused negligible material damage to Japan, but it succeeded in its goal of helping American morale, and casting doubt in Japan on the ability of the Japanese military leaders.

The Doolittle Raid, April 18, 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese home island of Honshu during World War II. The mission was notable since it was the only time in US Military history that United States Army Air Forces bombers (16 modified B-25B bombers) were launched from a US Navy aircraft carrier on a combat mission. The raid demonstrated that the Japanese home islands were vulnerable to Allied air attack, and it provided an expedient means for US retaliation for Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. The bombers were carried by the USS Hornet (CV-8) from Alameda, California to their launch point in the Pacific. At a distance of about 650 miles from Japan, the task force encountered a Japanese picket boat, which radioed an attack warning to Japan. Although the boat was destroyed by gunfire from the cruiser USS Nashville, Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle and Hornet skipper Captain Marc Mitscher decided to launch the B-25s immediately ten hours earlier and 170 miles farther from Japan than planned. The footage shows some of the men rescued from the picket boat (and I believe the boats destruction), although the shot of the Japanese men is overexposed. Most of the rest of our film shows the men preparing the aircraft for launch and launching. They launched their aircraft between 8:30 and 9:19 in the morning. This reel doesn't contain any footage after the raid left the Hornet there are a couple of still shots with possible bomb <b>...</b>
