Track #23 on Disc 3 Sung by Yui Makino (Japanese VA of Ryfia) Arc Rise Fantasia is a Wii RPG developed by Imageepoch and published in North America by Ignition Entertainment. The end credits theme for the game. The title can also translate to "Angel Stairs ~crepuscular rays~" I kind of think "The Angel's Ladder" is more fitting because crepuscular rays are also called "Jacob's Ladders" which also refer to ladders to heaven, accompanied by angels. Oddly enough, the JPop theme "Negai Hoshi" seen in Japanese trailers does not appear in-game, but it still has an ending vocal theme. I quite like it, too. It's a beautiful song. no quantum leap, I just implemented the crepuscular shader described in gpu gems III. Unfortunately, it still produces some masking artifacts (I'm not using the stencil buffer but only color values). Also, this effect is very expensive to compute (though it works on half resolution only), because it samples a ray from every screen position to the (virtual) center of a light source.

Crepuscular Rays with XNA
I got several requests regarding my last light shaft video which I deleted because it was so crappy. What you see here is the application I am going to explain in my next tutorial on how to implement volumetric lighting aka crepuscular rays aka light shafts aka god rays. The scene consists of three cascaded cogs I created with Cinema4D. The crepuscular ray shader is taken from GPU Gems III from the article by Mitchel. One BIG disadvantage of this approach is, that the light source has to be visible (in this case, placed right behind the cogs). There has been an interesting paper on Eurographics 2009 which avoids this problem by ray casting the shadow map. The application is coded with Visual Studio 2008 and XNA Gamestudio 3.0. The rendering is done as follows: 1. Draw the background 2. Draw all objects in black over the background 3. Perform the crepuscular ray shader on that masked texture Basically, you then additively render the original scene over the result, but I apply some additional filtering steps: 4. Extract luminance values greater than 1.0 5. Apply gaussian blur on high luminance values 6. Combine crepuscular rays, gaussian blur and colored cogs Done. More details in my tutorial. 4.

TCH: This Crepuscular Hour - Moholy Nagy takes a Holiday - Performance 1988
The audio for this clip was a live take from a rehearsal session so it is pretty raw and untreated. The performance itself was premiered at the 14th birthday celebrations for the Australian Experimental Art Foundation (aeaf) in Adelaide, South Australia, 1988. For the full performance TCH used 2 x Yamaha MT1X 4 track tape units; one with the backing recording made by Darrel and PB; and the second unit having 4 tracks of tape loops that Darrel 'played' as an intro and outro audio mash-up over the main mix. The violin and vocals were all performed live. The stills used here were shot by Darrel Merritt during the pre-show sound check on the Club Foote main stage. This proved to be one of TCH's most popular performance works from this period. This is the only recording of Bronia Iwanczak singing with TCH.

XNA Crepuscular Rays Post Process
So, I have been meaning to do god rays for ages and while doing the ST Excalibur post processing framework in SlimDX, thought I would give them a go. This clip is of my XNA engine, I still have an issue or two with the render in SlimDX, but I am sure, once I have time, I'll write up an XNA blog post about how I did this and the references I used. The Wag Performance Evening was a huge success with 6 independent art/music groups presenting across 2 stages for 1 big night in Adelaide (yes, they do occasionally happen there).
