Of course, up until now, we've only had the promise of the first book being made into a movie, but lucky for us, we just got word that the 2nd book in the series, Catching Fire, is set to hit the theatre circuit. That's right, and Lionsgate has even given the movie an official release date. November 22, 2013. Keep in mind that the first book in the Suzanne Collins series -- The Hunger Games -- will be ready for its silver screen debut on March 23, 2012. So basically, it seems like the series releases will be quite spaced out. And if the third book Mockingjay gets turned into a movie and follows suit with the sequel's theatre release, it would result in a possible theatrical release around July 25, 2014. Lionsgate has decided that he will be directing Catching Fire and this is news for fans. Of course, people were generally sad when it was announced that Gary Ross from The Hunger Games would not be returning for the next project, but Francis Lawrence will likely bring a new energy and feel to this production. This huge A-10 Warthog RC model plane suffered not one but two engine fires shortly after takeoff. Skillful piloting prevented a crash and a lot of fire extinguishers enabled the model to be saved but it was pretty spectacular. Speculation surrounding Ross' exit from the project has been swirling for several weeks, however as recently as last week, Lionsgate was not confirming the split. Just yesterday, Gary Ross released a statement that read QUOTE: Despite recent speculation in the media and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct "Catching Fire." As a writer and director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. This clarification puts the pre-existing rumors surrounding nothing more than Gary Ross wanting more money to rest. We just heard via The Hollywood Reporter, that Lionsgate has not confirmed the director for Catching Fire and at this point, it's all about negotiations. We hear that Gary wants a significant raise for the next installment -- probably because of the first film's 368-million dollar earnings at the box office in less than 2 weeks at the theatre. The report sites sources as revealing that the director earned a 3-million dollar paycheck for co-writing and directing Hunger Games, plus a 5-percent earning on the backend. THR also stated that Lionsgate apparently didn't even begin talks until 3 weeks before the March 23 movie opening and keep in mind that November 2013 is the quoted release timing for the next film. Gary Ross has confirmed, he will NOT be returning to the hunger games franchise...the details coming your way. "The Hunger Games" continues to dominate the box office, but according to the Hollywood reporter, director Gary Ross has confirmed that he's stepping away from the franchise. As we reported last week, rumors were swirling that this may happen, but until now, we had no proof...or any reason to believe that this would be true. Ross said in a statement it wasn't about money, or creative differences, it was all about the classic Hollywood excuse of timing. He said, "Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct 'Catching Fire.....As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule." He added- "contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic," and that the studio has been "understanding through this difficult decision."
