This large size leptocephalus must be a species of Muraenidae (moray eels), and probably the larva of a long thin ribbon eel, which is metamorphosing, not feeding, and is entering shallow water to finish metamorphosis into a young eel. (Larva identified by Michael J. Miller) Leptocephali are the unusual transparent larvae of eels and their close relatives. Because they are transparent they are so hard to spot and are hardly ever sighted. We were lucky enough to see one of them!! Filmed by Barry Haythorne and Rob Rutgers, HRF U/W Production

I proudly present yet another self-glorifying fixed gear video, adding to the erroneous plethora of useless fixed geared bicycle films littering the Internet. My latest epic release Fixed Gear Bali, is the follow up to the ever-popular Fixed Gear Jakarta, a film that went viral among my family. FGB is a transindental trip around the "Island of the Gods," highlighting the various sects of the blossoming partisan cycling movement. Fifty years ago most Indonesians rode bikes, and now thanks to clever marketing and a desperate need of group affirmation, urban dwellers of Indonesia's major cities are rediscovering their ancestry velocipede roots. Within the past two years Jakarta has seen an explosion from fewer than a dozen fixed gear bicycles to over four thousand. Bali has also caught the bike bug with fixies, junkers, cross, MTB's and foldables all taking to the streets in slow moving packs of trendy yet bewildered cyclist. If anything I find great hope in this movement as it shows there is more to cycling than lycra, and that through the acquisition of expensive imported parts one can define their unique identity. But more than anything it gets people off their exhaust belching motorbikes and out of their air-conditioned cars to experience their beautiful island home with a form of silent transport. A little local politics -- As a famous British guy said long ago, "In a democracy it's not our leaders who let us down it's the people who let the leaders down." So let our ...

The Indonesian island of Bali is a dream locale which consistently draws traveling surfers from all corners of the globe. Throughout the last 5 years, videographer Pete Matthews has been documenting the epic waves and diverse landscape that grace this special Indian Ocean isle. Matthews has captured the worlds best surfers along with the lifestyle and essence of four locals who appear more than ready for the world stage. The Godfather of Bali surfing Rizal Tanjung has carved himself a niche in the surf world and leads the way for his best friends Wayan "Betet" Merta, Made "Bol" Adi Putra, and Pepen Hendrix. Shades of Bali not only looks deep into the lives of these Balinese watermen, it also captures the skilled wave riding of the top-shelf professionals who continually return to this magical atoll. Mikala Jones, Jamie O'Brien, Taj Burrow, Dave Rastavich and others take full advantage of Balis flawless reefs, offshore winds, and endless tube rides. The high-quality, action footage in Shades of Bali is perfectly spliced with commentary by Rizal, Betet, Bol, Mikala Jones, Jamie OBrien, Jesse Merle-Jones and Pete Matthews, all set to an eclectic, soothing soundtrack.

THANKS FOR SUBSCRIBING TO BILLSCHANNEL - If you spent 27 hours and lots of money getting to Paradise, you expect some serious paradise, right? Not in Jimbaran Bay or Kuta Beach on the Island of Bali, Indonesia when I was there. The water and beaches were filled with more trash than I have ever seen on a beach. Indonesia's Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik has blamed the terrible condition of many of Bali's famed beaches, including Kuta, on the wind. The second-term minister, who has in the past faced criticism from the tourism industry about his ineffectiveness, said strong winds blew the garbage, dirt and other detritus onto the beach from the ocean. Jero, himself from Bali, also defended the resort island against a scathing article in Time magazine, which was titled "Holidays in Hell: Bali's Ongoing Woes." In the article, writer Andrew Marshall didn't hold back."Rivers swell and flush their trash and frothing human waste into the sea off Kuta Beach, the island's most famous tourist attraction, where bacteria bloom and the water turns muddy with dead plankton." He said skin infections caused by spending just 30 minutes in the ocean was just one of Bali's problems: "water shortages, rolling blackouts, uncollected trash, overflowing sewage-treatment plants and traffic so bad that parts of the island resemble Indonesia's gridlocked capital Jakarta.

July 2009 Not far from the beauty spots, Balis villages hide disturbing secrets. The mentally ill are left untreated and possibly hundreds are held in makeshift shackles. But one doctor wants to make a difference. He's been restrained since the '90s. He hasn't left here at all since 1990. A villager points to an elderly man chained up next to his own excrement. Such shocking sights are not unique in Bali. Helplessness and ignorance makes parents of mentally ill patients resort to confinement. I love my child. But he's destructive. Komangs father kept him locked in a cage for eight years before he met Dr Suryani. Balis leading psychiatrist, shes campaigned tirelessly to improve the islands mental health but the Health Minister is reluctant to help: We have a limited budget for drugs. Those drugs are expensive. So she pays them out of her own pocket. Her blend of Western and Balinese methods produces great results; thanks to her treatment, Komang is now recovered and even married.
