Description Vintage Japanese puzzle box. Boxes such as this are called himitsu-bako in Japanese and are an especially famous craft product of the Hakone area of central Japan. The boxes utilize special sliding doors and movable segments which allow successive parts of the box to open, revealing hidden drawers and storage spaces. The boxes often use special mosaic woodwork called yosegi-zaiku to decorate the outer surface. About the Listed Item This particular puzzle box isless than 40 years old and in good condition with some marks and scratches from handling and a darkened patina of age. Some of the wood veneer has come loose from the outer surface. This damage is pointed out in the listing video. The box's puzzle mechanism is a very tight from age and many of the sections require some careful handing and effort to open and close. This problem may become better or worse after the box is shipped to your location depending on how any changes in humidity affect the wood.
