Is Google+ Killing Anonymity?

Facebook decided a couple of years ago that you have to use your real name to become a member and now Google Plus has made it their new policy as well. It's started a fierce debate, Randi Zuckerberg, former Facebook marketing director said "anonymity on the Internet has to go away." But there are a lot of people fighting back against this statement, and now a new website has been dedicated to the cause of anonymity, called, "My name is Me". Electronic Frontier Foundation's Eva Galperin weighs in.

Censorship, Privacy, Anonymity, and Net Neutrality

March 4, 2011 - Adam Beberg presents several topics related to daily life on the Internet, suitable for a wide and non-technical audience. His work over the last two decades has centered around Distributed Computing, Security, and Education. Censorship limits what can be found when looking for news and information. Privacy is far more important than in the past since everything one does on the Internet can come back to do damage years later. Anonymity has turned the world into a happy but deceptive place, safer for both whistle-blowers and criminals. Net Neutrality is a three-way crash between technology, business, and political realities, that may have serious consequences for future freedoms and business opportunities. Psychosocial Impacts of Internet Anonymity [HD]

This brief informational video is intended to spread awareness of the causes of unintended and problematic behavior on the web. The internet's greatest utility is arguably the democracy lent by anonymity, but the unlimited free speech offered by the online environment is not necessarily being used to positive effect. See why and learn what you can do to retain the value of the web. Social interactions are typically grounded in unwritten rules of conduct. These rules are rarely enforced by authority, but there are often social consequences for avoiding them. How do people conduct themselves when the social consequences of face-to-face communication are minimized? This question forms the basis of the study of the Online Disinhibition Effect. This effect explains how and why given free rein in an online environment, people generally behave with less restraint. Abbreviated References Dooley, JJ, Pyzalski, J., & Cross, D. (2009). Your opinion On: Anonymity in Internet by Paulo Coelho

What about people who hide behind anonymity when they write comments in the internet? In my opinion this is the dark side when you are empowered by the fact that you dont have to be liable for your opinions. Im saying this because I met Jeff Jarvis from buzzmachine.com and Michael Arrington from TechCrunch.com and they told me that they are insulted every single day and in the case of Arrington someone even spat on his face. If we stood by our opinions, I think we should put our name next to it. However, if you go to any newspaper site and click on comments, you see that most people use nicknames in order to insult what people do. So, I would like to hear your opinion on anonymity in the internet.

TNTHII - anonymity

Basically anonymity on the internet is good, it doesn't make us to do something that we wouldn't do, it is just an opportunity. Personally I don't believe in anonymity in a way as many other people believe, I know that everything can be traced to its original source and sometimes I just don't want to risk something like that. But most of the times I'm saying what I think anyway. As a research for this I was reading several articles about 4chan anonymity and about m00t, because obviously he is very insightful in this area. Now that pretty much everyone has a smartphone, and face recognition is pretty good, and everyone has put photos of themselves on the Internet, are we about to have a complete loss of public anonymity?" There is a delicate balance that must be maintained. For every reason systems like these may be useful, there is a counter-argument against any stripping of anonymity. What do you think? Who I am

After numerous requests and much speculation I have decided to 'out' myself and reveal my identity and resume. I hope this will add weight to the research I present on this channel, although I am still not the source for the information presented in my videos. My sources are all listed, and should be checked. I would like my 'outing' to also act as a launch pad for opinion and comment in some of my future videos, where it is warranted and based on my own expertise. However, most of my videos will remain factual. I prefer to present the facts, show my sources, let people check the facts and make up their own minds. You don't need me to tell you what to think. Jacob Appelbaum at University of Luxembourg talking about Tor anonymity network and censorship

Abstract: Are you interested in how governments and corporations attempt to censor access to the Tor network? Wonder what protocol fingerprints are actually used as protocol distinguishers? This talk will cover some real world examples that the Tor network faces and it will discuss deployed solutions; hopefully we'll have lots of room for discussion for future development. Jacob Appelbaum (@ioerror, en.wikipedia.org ) is a renowned independent internet security professional, accomplished photographer, software hacker and world traveller. A developer for The Tor Project, Appelbaum trains interested parties globally on how to effectively use and contribute to the Tor network. Since its initial release, Tor has enabled roughly 36 million people around the world to experience freedom of access and expression on the Internet while keeping them in control of their privacy and anonymity. Its network has proved pivotal in dissident movements in both Iran and more recently Egypt. A driving force in the team behind the creation of the Cold Boot Attacks, Appelbaum won both the Pwnie for Most Innovative Research award and the Usenix Security best student paper award in 2008. Additionally, he was part of the MD5 Collisions Inc. team that created a rogue CA certificate by using a cluster of 200 PlayStations funded by the Swiss taxpayers. Taking full advantage of the anonymity provided by the Internet, the boys of B1A4 (under WM Entertainment) were first introduced to us via 'webtoon' format, and information about the members was gradually released as the days creeped up to their impending debut. On April 21st, all five members were revealed: Baro, CNU (Shin Woo), Gongchan, Jinyoung (leader), and Sandeul; one lead rapper (two, if you count CNU, who raps and sings), and three vocalists. B1A4, which stands for "Be the one, all for one" (also interpreted as a combination of blood types, one member being blood type B and the rest blood type A), are currently promoting "OK", the lead single from their debut mini album, "Let's Fly." How did their debut fare? Let's find out. -- Track List: 01. OK 02. Remember 03. 못된 것만 배워서 04. Bling Girl 05. Only One 06. This kind of sheer force wasn't present last year, and it's a good sight to see all these newbie groups starting off on the right foot. For rookies, B1A4 have two things going for them: solid vocals and a great stage presence. Those two aspects of music are key to succeed, not to mention vital in the world of mainstream music. Anti-Censorship & Transparency - Roger Dingledine

The Internet has proved its tremendous potential for the enjoyment of freedom of expression and information as well as of many other human rights. The Internet has become an important channel that makes it possible for us to communicate and interact without borders or limits. There are however strong powers promoting limitations of the Internet, as well as powers to protect openness. During this session we would like to demonstrate how the Internet is used for purposes supporting human rights and freedom of speech. Roger Dingledine is project leader for The Tor Project, a US non-profit working on anonymity research and development for such diverse organizations as the US Navy, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Voice of America. In addition to all the hats he wears for Tor, Roger organizes academic conferences on anonymity, speaks at a wide variety of industry and hacker conferences, and also does tutorials on anonymity for national and foreign law enforcement. The Book My Project | Nymble Blocking Misbehaving Users in Anonymizing Networks

info@thebookmyproject.com www.thebookmyproject.com Abstract Anonymizing networks such as Tor allow users to access Internet services privately by using a series of routers to hide the client's IP address from the server. The success of such networks, however, has been limited by users employing this anonymity for abusive purposes such as defacing popular websites. Website administrators routinely rely on IP-address blocking for disabling access to misbehaving users, but blocking IP addresses is not practical if the abuser routes through an anonymizing network. As a result, administrators block all known exit nodes of anonymizing networks, denying anonymous access to misbehaving and behaving users alike. To address this problem, we present Nymble, a system in which servers can "blacklist" misbehaving users, thereby blocking users without compromising their anonymity. Our system is thus agnostic to different servers' definitions of misbehavior — servers can blacklist users for whatever reason, and the privacy of blacklisted users is maintained.

HOW TO: Get a proxy for your internet browser

Whats a proxy server? A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server, then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes. Types of Proxies: * Transparent Proxy - This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server and also makes the original IP address available through the http headers. These are generally used for their ability to cache websites and do not effectively provide any anonymity to those who use them. However, the use of a transparent proxy will get you around simple IP bans. They are transparent in the terms that your IP address is exposed, not transparent in the terms that you do not know that you are using it (your system is not specifically configured to use it.) * Anonymous Proxy - This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but does not make the original IP address available. This type of proxy server is detectable, but provides reasonable anonymity for most users. * Distorting Proxy - This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but make an incorrect original IP address available through the http headers. * High Anonymity Proxy ...

General Stanley McChrystal apologizes to the White House over Rolling Stone Article

Gereral Stanley McChrystal, the top US commander in Afghanistan was fighting for his job Tuesday after being summoned to Washington to explain a magazine profile that included derogatory comments about President Barack Obama and his colleagues. The article will appear in Rolling Stone Magazine later this week, titled Runaway General or Lone Wolf General. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Gen. Stanley McChrystal's comments were "distractions" to the war in Afghanistan. McChrystal, who publicly apologized Tuesday for using "poor judgment" in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine, has been ordered to appear at the White House Wednesday, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. He'll be expected to explain his comments in the magazine's profile, titled "The Runaway General," to the president and top Pentagon officials, officials said. A top military official in Afghanistan told The Associated Press that McChrystal hasn't been told whether he will be allowed to keep his job. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions between Washington and the general's office in Kabul. McChrystal spent Tuesday calling several of those mentioned in the article to apologize, officials said, including Gates and Richard Holbrooke, US special envoy to Pakistan. Gates issued a statement saying McChrystal made "a significant mistake" and used poor judgment in his remarks to a magazine reporter ...

Privacy and anonymity are dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to the proxies you use. Please be careful using FoxyProxy if you are expecting complete anonymity because some have argued that FoxyProxy -- when used in patterns mode (identified by the orange FoxyProxy icon and the Use proxies based on their pre-defined patterns and priorities text) -- can actually make you more susceptible to privacy breaches.
