Beowulf & the Anglo-Saxons (Part 1)

Miraculously preserved over the centuries, its artistic importance was unrecognized until an essay by JRR Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings) revealed its unity and multi-dimensional structure. Beowulf is now regarded as the most important manuscript the Anglo-Saxons have handed down to us, of immense linguistic as well as poetic value. This program sets out to trace the origins of the tribes that brought this epic into being, the war-like Northmen from Sweden, Denmark and Germany who were to conquer and settle regions of a more clement and fertile island that would become known as England, named after the tribe of the Angles. Using 3-D animation, location footage, archive materials and interviews, the Beowulf epic is examined in the light of the civilization that created it. It investigates their religious beliefs as well as their everyday life, and suggests that, old as the poem is, it may have roots in an even more ancient fertility cult.

The Anglo-Saxon Mission, explained by Bill Ryan : a Project Avalon video

In January 2010, Project Camelot received 11 pages of information from an insider who was physically present at a meeting of Senior Masons in the City of London in 2005. What was discussed is chilling to the bone. What our source reports is this: * There is a planned Third World War, which will be nuclear and biological. Our source believes that this is on track to be initiated within the next 18-24 months. * It is planned to begin with a strike by Israel on Iran. Either Iran or China will be provoked into a nuclear response. After a brief nuclear exchange, there will be a ceasefire. The world will be thrown into fear and chaos - all carefully engineered. * The extreme state of tension will be used to justify heavy social and military controls in all western first world nations. Plans are already in place for that. * During the nuclear ceasefire, there is planned to be a covert release of biological weapons. These will initially be targeted against the Chinese. As our source chillingly told us, "China will catch a cold". Biological warfare will spread further, to the west. Infrastructure will be critically weakened. * This is intended to be just the beginning. After this, a full nuclear exchange would be triggered: the "real" war, with widespread destruction and loss of life. Our source tells us that the planned population reduction through these combined means is 50%. He heard this figure stated in the meeting. This horrific scenario has been planned for generations. Migration of Germanic peoples to Britain from what is now northern Germany and southern Scandinavia is attested from the 5th century (eg Undley bracteate). Based on Bede's Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, the intruding population is traditionally divided into Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, but their composition was likely less clear-cut and may also have included Frisians . The Parker Library holds the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle which contains text that may be the first recorded indications of the movement of these Germanic Tribes to Britain. The main Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms circa AD 600Christianization of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms began in 597 and was at least nominally completed in 686. Throughout the 7th and 8th centuries, power fluctuated between the larger kingdoms. Bede records Aethelbert of Kent as being dominant at the close of the 6th century, but power seems to have shifted northwards to the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. Aethelbert and some of the later kings of the other kingdoms were recognised by their fellow kings as Bretwalda (ruler of Britain). The so-called 'Mercian Supremacy' dominated the 8th century, though again it was not constant. Aethelbald and Offa, the two most powerful kings, achieved high status. This period has been described as the Heptarchy, though this term has now fallen out of academic use. The word arose on the basis that the seven kingdoms of Northumbria, Mercia, Kent, East Anglia, Essex, Sussex and Wessex were the main polities of ...

Beowulf - "Opening Lines"

One of Europe's greatest epics, the story of King Hrothgar, the monster Grendel and the hero Beowulf has been passed down in written form for hundreds of generations. In this remarkable one-man tour de force, Benjamin Bagby (co-founder and director of the Sequentia ensemble for medieval music), accompanying himself on an Anglo-Saxon harp, delivers this gripping tale — in the original Old English — as it could have been experienced more than 1000 years ago. Bagby has been performing the great epic Beowulf at major festivals and venues around the world since 1990. Now we have his remarkable performance on DVD, beautifully filmed by award-winning Swedish director Stellan Olsson. For more information, go to: www.britishdvdcollection.com www.kochvision.com

Sutton Hoo: Anglo-Saxon Ship Burial

This is about the Anglo-Saxon ship burial under Mound One at Sutton Hoo, in Suffolk England. It was discovered in the summer of 1939 and is one of the richest finds in English archaeology. The excavation was begun by Basil Brown, a local, self-taught archaeologist, hired by Mrs Edith Pretty, the owner of Sutton Hoo, and was completed by a team of professional archaeologists. It is believed the grave might have been that of King Raedwald of the East Angles (reigned c. 599-624), who, according to the Venerable Bede, converted to Christianity, but also continued to worship the Anglo-Saxons' traditional pagan deities. The Anglo-Saxons came to Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries from homelands in north-west Europe. This was after the collapse of Roman rule in Britain, and before the Viking invasions of c. 800-1035.

Wulf & Eadwacer (Old English Reading)

Wulf & Eadwacer is an Anglo Saxon poem composed between 960 and 990 AD. Of famously difficult interpretation, it has been variously characterised, (modernly) as an elegy, (historically) as a riddle, and (in speculation on the poem's pre-history) as a song or ballad with refrain. The only extant copy is found in the Exeter Book. Old English text: Leodum is minum swylce him mon lac gife; willað hy hine aþecgan, gif he on þreat cymeð. Ungelic is us. Wulf is on iege, ic on oþerre. Fæst is þæt eglond, fenne biworpen. Sindon wælreowe weras þær on ige; willað hy hine aþecgan, gif he on þreat cymeð. Ungelice is us. Anglo-Saxon gold hoard is the biggest - and could get bigger

The man who discovered the Staffordshire hoard Terry Herbert, metal detector enthusiast, uncovered a hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold so large it will "redefine the Dark Ages" - This hoard will change lives. Terry Herbert, the finder, and the anonymous landowner will be well compensated: by how much no one knows, but such is the scale of the treasure that when the valuation committee meets, it will have to consider the depressive effect of unleashing on to the market a record quantity of supreme gold artistry. The farmer who not long ago sold the field to its present owner might lose a few nights' sleep, too. But what does it mean for the rest of us? How exceptional is the Staffordshire hoard? And how will it change the way we think about our past, about Anglo-Saxon kingship, war, art and the origins of England? Without question this is the largest group of gold artefacts ever found in British soil. Many of the pieces are of the highest quality design and technique, from a time that excelled in the creation of fine jewellery and weaponry. There really is nothing like it, but it reminds me of a prehistoric find made near Salisbury in the 1980s. Here, too, archaeologists were staggered by the sheer scale: there were more than 500 bronze items, including curious miniature shields. But that hoard was illegally excavated and sold, and we will never fully understand it. By contrast, thanks to Herbert's professional skills and attitude, we know everything we could about the ...

Anglo-Saxon Pig

www.facebook.com www.ceepackaging.com twitter @ceepackaging www.facebook.com Here we have a supposed example of an Anglo Saxon pig as kept by Bede's World in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, UK. Bede's World is a fascinating museum of early Anglo Saxon life revolving around the monastery at Jarrow with not only history but showing the animals that were reared there such as this pig. "Servant of Christ and Priest of the Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul which is at Wearmouth and Jarrow." These are the words which Bede used to describe himself. Today, we probably know him best as the author of the Ecclesiastical History of the English People which he completed in 731CE. This work is our primary source for understanding the beginnings of the English people and the coming of Christianity. This is the first work of history in which the AD dating system is used - I however use the CE (Christian Era or Common Era) abbreviation. Bede was born in AD 673 on the lands of the monastery. Of his family background we know nothing, save that he was entrusted at the age of 7 to the care of Benedict Biscop, the founder of the monastery, and then to Ceolfrith who in AD 681 was appointed Abbot of the new foundation at Jarrow. Bede spent the rest of his life in the monastery. He was ordained deacon at the age of 19 and priest at 30. He observed the Rule of the monastery and was punctilious in his attendance in choir at the daily offices. Outside of his time in choir, he worked as scholar and teacher ...

Old English / Anglo- Saxon : A Very Brief Introduction

NOTE : I sometimes say the g in the text as the modern German G as in "Grüß Dich". We do not fully know the exact pronunciation of Old English and the pronunciation is often based on Late West Saxon texts, where the phonology is influenced by north Germanic where the g is often said as "y". My pronunciation is not perfect and I tend to default back to a likely earlier sound because of my speaking German. Making an Anglo-Saxon Lyre part 1

The first batch of my lyre kits have been sent out, and should be arrived shortly. This is the first part of the series and is the one with the most work to do, somehow I managed to get the video edited down to 10 minutes! It was filmed mostly outside to get the best light, but it was freezing and you can just about see the snow that was falling around me at the end. please feel free to ask questions if I have glossed over anything, I do do so many things unconsciously that its hard to pin down some processes. The planing of the top is one example, I plane the wood very close to final dimensions, making the wood as thin as i can without loss of strength, but I have to add a mm when talking about it or people will end up right through the top at a handstroke!! Note:This video series is to accompany the written notes in the Kit, but will also serve to aid anyone making one from scratch, or following my Lyre CD-rom. The series will be released out of sequence over the next few weeks but eventually will end up on someones playlist in order: Making an Anglo-Saxon Lyre from a Kit part 1: Planing the soundboard Part 2: Gluing the top Part 3: Trimming the overhang Part 4: Sanding and final shaping Part 5: Varnishing Part 6: Setting up the Lyre: tuning pins and tailpiece Part 7: Setting up the lyre: bridge and strings Disclaimer: Always follow safe practices while working with tools. Man finds Anglo-Saxon Gold Treasure with Metal Detector, Relic Hunter Discovers Gold Hoard

Story September 2009 An amateur relic hunter Terry Herbert has stumbled upon a spectacular Anglo Saxon gold hoard in Staffordshire, England. The hoard, possibly from the Seventh Century was found in an undisclosed farmer's field. It has been declared treasure which means that the finder and the landowner will share in the value of the find. The find has been compared to the treasure trove of Sutton Hoo, discovered in the late 1930s. "The weapons and helmet decorations, coins and Christian crosses amount to more than 1500 pieces, with hundreds still embedded in blocks of soil. It adds up to 5kg of gold three times the amount found in the famous Sutton Hoo ship burial in 1939 and 2.5kg of silver, and may be the swag from a spectacularly successful raiding party of warlike Mercians, some time around AD700." Guardian Newspaper The field's whereabouts is being kept secret until archaeologists can determine if all of the treasure trove has been found. The museum at Birmingham will display the items and then they will be off to the British Museum for further study and valuation. The rough estimates are in the millions of pounds. Anglo-Saxon Empire is ISRAEL

In the Bible, racial Jews (better rendered Jehudite) are Israelites, but not all Israelites are Jehudite. This fact was overlooked when Foy Wallace Jr., wrote and published God's Prophetic Word (Ft. Worth, TX: E. Wallace Publications, 1946) p. 402. Wallace concluded that because "the terms 'Jews' and 'Israel' are used interchangeably" in the Bible "they are identical." This error can be compared with the statement, "All French Poodles are dogs, Therefore all dogs are French Poodles." Or to relate it in human terms one might say, All Zulus are descended from African tribes therefore all African tribes are Zulu. The same applies to all Israelites being Jehudite. Abraham is properly identified in Genesis 14:13 as being of the Hebrew or Hebrew tribes at the time. Therefore if this meant Abraham were a "Jew", then that would mean that "ALL" his descendants are also Jews. This is exactly what most people and most modern Jews will insist to be correct. How can this be true? If Abraham were Jewish then his first son Ishmael would also be a Jew. Ishmael is said to be the father of all Arabs! Therefore if what we are told by most ministers and Jews is true, then all Arabs are Jews. Obliviously this is not the case! Also it is inappropriate to refer to Abraham as an Israelite. The Israelites were the children of his grandson Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel. Therefore the term, peoples or nation simply didn't exist as yet.

Anglo-Saxon Poetry: The Wanderer

The Wanderer Translated by W. R Sims Recited by Charles Bryant Anglo-Saxon poetry can often be fairly maudlin. I have taken on when reading 'The Wanderer' the mantle of the bard. See him standing now in the fire-lit mead-hall surrounded by the warriors and their families and servers, dogs and cats and favourite pet ravens, well soaked with the beery libations, intoning his sad poem! Can't you just hear them all sobbing? Of course, it is a heavily Christianised message, hence much of the morbidity; but also the mood is innate with these often glum fighters. Some people have put it down to the English weather! But oh, the sense of relief when the recitation is complete, the falling tears in the beer-horn; and then, by contrast, the knowledge that one is still alive, still among friends and family, still fairly hale and hearty. You always feel much better after a good old cry!
