Electronic music pioneer Bebe Barron talks about her friend and mentor Anais Nin. Video by Ian MacKinnon & Steven Reigns for the event "Anais Nin @ 105" in February 2008. Bebe Barron is, with the late Louis Barron, an American pioneer in the field of electronic music. They are credited with writing the first electronic music for magnetic tape and the first entirely electronic film score for Forbidden Planet. In 1949, the Barrons recorded a full version of Nin's House of Incest and four stories from Under a Glass Bell. These recordings were pressed on red vinyl and released on the Barrons' Contemporary Classics record label under the Sound Portraits series. They also scored three of Ian Hugo's short experimental films based on the writings of his wife, Anais Nin. The most notable of these three films were Bells of Atlantis (1952) and Jazz of Lights (1954). Bebe was friends with Nin in New York and continued their friendship when both of them lived in Los Angeles. Bebe frequently visited Anais in her Silverlake home and chose Nin to be godmother to Bebe's son Adam. Filmed by Ian Mackinnon

1984 is a song that cleverly fuses George Orwell's novel "1984" with the times of today also adding to the punchline of Prince's 1999. Probably one of the most clever tunes I've heard in years. What a group of musicians. I shot this footage at Guilford College during a very intimate show. Sit back and enjoy some music that your mind will enjoy. Visit their site. tinpancaravan.com

Hadestown: A folk opera retelling of the story of Orpheous journey to the underworld to save his wife Eurydice, in the setting of a post-apocalyptic depression era America. Rich with archetypal images and elements, and in the context of the current global economic problems (even though it was written years before the Sept 08 banking crisis), it is more Americana than Greek tragedy, although it closely follows this Orpheous story version. The arrangements, the lyrical story creation, and the players, including Greg Brown as Hades in "Why We Build..." and Ani DiFranco as Persephone in Our Lady of the..." are robust, masterful and immaculate. This recording is destined to be considered a Masterpiece amongst musicians and listeners alike.
